* Terror of the Deep is the first time submarines were implemented as a playable class in World of Warships.
* The submarines in the event are all modelled and based on real submarines:
** Submarines Gerfalcon, Seelöwe and Killer Whale are based on the Type XXVI (in-game: U-4501), Type XXI (in-game: U-2501) and USS Gato respectively.
** While the real-life counterparts of Barracuda and Zipper Sub are not implemented in the game, they’re inspired by the British HMS X-1 and Soviet M-class submarines (possibly a series XII variant) respectively.
* All subs in the event were listed as tier 7.
* The submarine commanders in this gamemode have been seen in different ships from the prior events, and the respective submarine designs reflect the aesthetic of their original ship.

Saving Transylvania

Players must escort the Transylvania to the portal at the eastern side of the map, while defending her from enemy ships.

Summary

Saving Transylvania is a PVE Scenario that debuted during Halloween 2016, and reran each year up until 2022 (excluding 2020). Through 2019-2021, two additional difficulties were added for the operation: Hard and Super Hard.

In Saving Transylvania, your mission is to escort the Transylvania through hordes of undead Zikasas, fireball-slinging catapults, and to ultimately face the terrifying Rasputin.

Saving Transylvania is the first of four story-linked operations, with the sequeling operations being Sunray in the Darkness, Terror of the Deep and finally Last Voyage of Transylvania. The special gamemode Twilight Battle is also set within the same world.

Overview

The King's flagship Transylvania was pulled into the portal by a mysterious force and disappeared. Without hesitation, the Transylvania’s escorts follow suit. Beyond the portal, the captains discovered an unknown realm, a realm of darkness. Infront of the ships, the Transylvania floats unharmed, and in the distance, the portal looms. The captains decide to tow the Transylvania back to the portal. But as they sail, catapults start firing, and monstrous ships appear. Only by destroying them all will the Transylvania and her crew be able to make it safely back to their own realm.

Objectives

Task Priority Details Requirement Pins Earned
Primary "Escort Transylvania" Sail to the portal alongside Transylvania. N/A
Secondary "Suppress all catapults" Suppress all catapults on map. There are 9 or 10, depending on year and difficulty.
Secondary "Make sure Transylvania doesn't lose more than 50% of her hit points" Transylvania should not lose more than 50% of her hit points.
Secondary "Eliminate all foes" Sink 16 Zikasas.
Secondary "Transylvania must not stop" Once Transylvania starts moving, it must not stop.
Secondary “Sink Rasputin.” Destroy the battleship Rasputin.

Walkthrough

At the start of the operation, players spawn at the west-end of the map behind the Transylvania, which is stationary. As soon as an allied ship enters the circle, the Transylvania will start moving forward. To keep the Transylvania moving, at least one allied ship must remain within the escort circle throughout the entire operation. Additionally, the Transylvania will stop if enemy ships enter the circle.

During the early-mid-stage of the game, the Transylvania will sail either south or north of the island at E4. Gameplay does not change much regardless of the route, but players will need to change and plan their routes accordingly to keep sailing alongside the Transylvania. During the same time, Zikasas will spawn from the rear, around where the players start.

During the mid-late-game stage of the operation, additional Zikasas will spawn closer to the Transylvania. As the Transylvania moves closer to the portal, the Rasputin will spawn in front of it, along with two Zikasas on it’s port and starboard side. When Rasputin sails closer, it may turn to move north or south of the Transylvania, and may sometimes even sail into the circle if it is not destroyed in time.

The Transylvania will keep sailing towards the portal as long as there are allies inside the circle. When Transylvania reaches the portal, the game ends regardless of whether all enemy ships, including Rasputin, are sunk.

Tips

  • Most allied ships should stay in front of, or to the side of the Transylvania, as defending it is the main objective.
  • The main objective of Blade is to sail around and torpedo enemy ships, and to lay smokescreens for the Transylvania during the late game.
  • Igor’s role is to primarily use its powerful HE with a 35% fire chance to set fires on as many enemy ships as possible.
  • The Jackal's role is to be the main tanking force defending the Transylvania, and to focus and eliminate the catapults as quickly as possible.
  • The speed of the Transylvania varies depending on how many ships are inside the escort circle. It is recommended to have no more than three ships within the circle, as more ships means that the friendly battleships will have trouble catching up, and additionally the Transylvania will be sailing into danger faster.
  • In the middle stage of the operation, Zikasas will appear from the rear of the convoy. They can safely be ignored as they are unable to catch up (as long as the Transylvania does not stop).
  • The catapults take full damage from AP, so using that shell type against them is recommended.
  • In later stages of the game, coordinating and laying smokes for Transylvania along the escort path can protect her from enemy fire.
  • While ramming enemy ships does not deal much damage, in some situations, ramming the Rasputin in the late stages of the game can prevent it from sailing into the Transylvania's circle.
  • While playing Jackal, shooting at the “mouth” on the bow of the Zikasas can yield citadel hits.
  • The main guns on Zikasas do not work, only the secondaries do, and they have a range of 3 km. Attempt to destroy the Zikasa before it reaches secondary range.

Rewards & Achievements

Commemorative Achievement - Ghostbuster.

Completing the operation for the first time yields players the "Ghostbuster" achievement (can only be claimed once).

In 2016, stars did not give rewards, instead, players received missions they could complete once per game, and could receive:

  • 30k credits, if they dealt 10k damage.
  • 100k credits, if they dealt 100k damage.
  • 70k credits, for sinking 2 Zikasas.
  • 100 free exp for every secondary task completed.

For completing every mission, players would receive 1 Halloween 2016 camoflage.

The following years, the stars for each secondary tasks gave various rewards, as summarized in the table below:

Requirement 2017 2018 2019-2021 (Normal) 2019-2021 (Hard) 2019-2021 (Super Hard)

Trivia

  • The playable ships each included a special commander, Abraham V. Hellsinger for Blade, Victor F. Einstein for Igor, and Henry J. Hide for Jackal. Both the commander and ship names are references to characters or elements within classic literature or media based on of it.
    • Abraham V. Hellsinger referencing Van Helsing from Bram Stoker’s Dracula, while Blade might be a reference to the weapons he uses in the film Van Helsing (2004).
    • Victor F. Einstein references Victor Frankenstein from Mary Shelley’s Frankenstein. While Igor is not a canonical character in Frankenstein, multiple Frankenstein movies have featured a lab assistant named Igor, like in the Son of Frankenstein (1939).
    • Henry J. Hide references Mr. Hyde, and Jackal references Dr. Jekyll, both from The Strange Case of Dr. Jekyll and Mr Hyde, by Robert Louis Stevenson.
  • Zikasa is a portmanteau of "Zombie" and "Mikasa".
  • Saving Transylvania was the first PvE Operation added to World of Warships, debuting on the 27th October 2016.
  • In 2016, the Halloween event ships were displayed as tier XI.
  • For the 2021 rerun of Saving Transylvania, the skybox was changed, thus altering the lighting and atmosphere of the map.

Sunray in the Darkness

Players must defend the Transylvania and the towers to seal the portal.

Summary

Sunray in the Darkness is a PVE Scenario that debuted in 2017 as the Halloween event of said year. It reran each year up until 2022 (discounting 2020). In 2018, an additional difficulty was added: Hard, and during 2019-2021, a Super Hard difficulty would be added alongside the existing Normal and Hard difficulties.

In Sunray in the Darkness the forces of good have to fend off against an onslaught of enemy ships, while waiting for the towers to seal the portal. To defend the realm of light, players have the option to helm one of four new unique ships: Urashima, Svyatozar, Magnu-S and Nobilium (only available through 2017-2018).

Sunray in the Darkness is the second operation of the Transylvania storyline, being a direct sequel to Saving Transylvania and preceding Terror of the Deep.

Overview

After the Transylvania, along with her escorts passed through the portal and disappeared, mages panicked and sealed the portal with the help of three magical towers. The Transylvania was still within the other realm though, and the King along with the Transylvania, needed to be brought back to Silverspear Archipelago safely. The portal needed to be reopened.

Thus, the most advanced ships of the fleet were sent out to retrieve Transylvania: Urashima, Svyatozar, Magnu-S and Nobilium.

As the mages reopened the portal, the Transylvania along with her escorts emerged, and the King onboard was alive. But behind them, a fleet of monstrous and hostile ships pursued, and a noxious filth spread, destroying all life. The heroes must protect the towers to help them seal off the portal to prevent the evil from spreading and conquering the realm of light.

Objectives

Task Priority Details Requirement Pins Earned
Primary "Defend the towers until they seal the portal" Make sure the enemy ships don't destroy the towers before the time runs out. N/A
Secondary "Save Transylvania" Make sure the enemy does not sink Transylvania.
Secondary "Eliminate all foes in the filth" Sink 30 ships.
Secondary "Save two towers" Complete the operation with two towers still standing.
Secondary "Banish the Great Gorgon" Destroy the aircraft carrier Great Gorgon.
Secondary “Banish Rasputin.” Destroy the battleship Rasputin.

Walkthrough

Players spawn southwest from the center of the map, facing the portal. 10 seconds after the operation starts, the Transylvania and her escorts emerge from the portal, sailing on a straight course away from the portal (from south-west to north-east). 40 seconds after the operation starts, enemies show up and the towers begin sealing the portal. With three towers operational, closing the portal only takes 10 minutes. If towers are destroyed though, the time to close the portal will increase. The added delay varies relative to how much time is left for the portal to be sealed, thus the less time there is to seal the portal, the less the penalty for a tower being destroyed will be.

The new entity: filth, decreases the spotting range, and additionally deals damage to allied ships. Within the filth, the boss ships Rasputin and the Great Gorgon will heal.

The first six enemy ships that spawn are Zikasas, already familiar from Saving Transylvania. After that, three new main enemy ships start spawning: Ghoul, Scarab and Varg, all of which spawn inside of the filth.

When the filth reaches closer to the first tower, enemy ships will deviantly spawn outside the filth, one group to the north-east of the first tower, and one group on the north-west side. During the same time, Rasputin spawns with either one of the groups, or alternatively inside the filth. As the filth expands and engulfs the first tower, it generally collapses through fire from ships inside the filth, delaying the progress of sealing the portal.

During the middle of the operation, the Great Gorgon spawns within the filth around grid-square H2, and stays in it for most of the operation, only moving forward with the filth.

The filth continues to expand, and enemies continue to spawn within as long as the portal remains open. When the towers seal the portal, the filth recedes back into the portal, and all enemies are destroyed. Enemies destroyed in this way do not count toward the objective goals. If all three allied towers are destroyed, you lose the operation.

Tips

  • Ramming the Great Gorgon while using “Energy Shield” on Magnu-S is the swiftest way to destroy the former.
  • It is advised for one Magnu-S to stay close to the Transylvania, as it draws fire away from the objective ship, and Magnu-S repair zone also heals Transylvania, should it take some fire.
  • Be careful with positioning. Before the enemy groups next to the first tower spawns, move in close with your destroyers or battleships to eliminate them as quickly as possible.
  • If enemies are coming close enough to fire at the towers, attempt to make yourself a target to distract the enemies, either through positioning in front of the towers, or opening fire and moving close to them. Every extra second bought with the towers up matters.
  • Focus on destroying the enemy ships closest to the towers or Transylvania first.

Rewards & Achievements

Commemorative Achievement - Exorcist.

Completing the operation for the first time yields players the "Exorcist" achievement (can only be claimed once).

Trivia

  • The ships Urashima, Svyatozar, Magnu-S and Nobilium are based on the ships Kagero, Chapayev, Tirpitz and Lexington.
  • The new enemy ships: Ghoul, Scarab, Varg and the Great Gorgon are based on the ships: Benson, Charles Martel, Bismarck and Shokaku respectively.
  • Aircraft carrier Nobilium was only playable during the events in 2017-2018. In subsequent years it was made unavailable.
  • During the original 2017 run of Sunray in the Darkness, the filth had a unique look, resembling a dark green cloud expanding out from the portal. In later iterations, the filth would be replaced with a more stylized variant.
  • Similar to Saving Transylvania, the commanders and ship names are references to various media:
    • Commander Mina Hurray of the Urashima references Mina Murray from Bram Stoker’s Dracula, while Urashima may be a reference to the protagonist of of well known Japanese folklore: Urashima Taro.
    • Klaus V. Teslau references Nikola Tesla, and his ship Magnu-S is detailed around that, featuring prominent Tesla coils and electricity. Alternatively Teslau and Magnu-S may both be references to the TV series Sanctuary that features a character named Nikola Tesla that becomes a good friend to another physician and scientist, Helen Magnus.
    • Commander Ivan K. Ulibin of the Svyatozar references Ivan Kulibin, an 18th century Russian mechanic and inventor.
    • In Jack-o'-Lantern containers, commander Ivan K. Ulibin is available, but is renamed "Sairus Guererro".
  • The name “Magnu-S” or Magnus has also appeared in Halloween Events within World of Tanks, specifically the Mirny-13 gamemodes.
  • In the Developer Diaries video for Sunray in the Darkness, some ships are seen with different working names: Svyatozar is named Danko, Magnu-S is named Beowulf. Additionally Varg, one of the enemy ships, is named Kurtz.

Bugs

  • During 2017, a bug was present where an operation would be completed, but not registered as such, thus players faced a situation where they would not be rewarded for the battle.
  • In replays, the timer to seal the portal, along with the ship names, are bugged.

Terror of the Deep (WIP)

Players must escort the Transylvania to the portal at the eastern side of the map, while defending her from enemy ships.
