HMS ''Eagle'' was an Audacious-class aircraft carrier of the Royal Navy in service from 1951 to 1972. The carrier was completed to a substantially altered project and was later given an extensive modernization to carry and operate the most advanced deck-based aircraft of the 1950s, including jet aircraft.<br /><br />''{{#var:ship_name}}'' was released into the British tech tree on 14 April 2022.

HMS ''Eagle'' is a supercarrier with torpedo and dive bombers found on HMS ''Audacious'' but with jet boosters. She also has tactical jet aircraft consisting of Attack Aircraft, Torpedo Bombers, and Dive Bombers. The supercarrier’s primary strike force consists of utilizing the tactical jet aircraft once they have completed their preparation phase while utilizing the standard planes while waiting for the tactical jet aircraft to be prepared. The addition of jet boosters to the standard planes will be familiar to those who have played the Soviet aircraft carrier line and allow for the rapid deployment of planes immediately after launch. With these squadrons, ''Eagle'' is most effective at launching rapid strikes at larger ships while retaining the versatility to hunt down smaller ships.
===Pros===

* Pro 2

'''English Electric Canberra DB'''
===Cons===
* Con 1
* Con 2

These jet bombers are the most powerful squadrons found on ''Eagle''. Each strike consists of 2 planes with 9 high explosive bombs each. As each bomb deals up to 7900 damage, even a single bomb will heavily damage targets, and well-aimed strikes can cripple them. With 54mm of penetration and a decent 45% fire chance, these bombs are well suited for targeting even the most heavily armored battleships and cruisers. With a long and narrow attack reticle, these squadrons are able to inflict massive amounts of damage and numerous fires to capital ships along their entire lengths if aimed properly. In addition, these jet bombers have the highest health pool among Eagle’s jet squadrons while also being capable of reaching speeds of up to 326 knots, enabling them to reach targets quickly and survive long enough in anti-aircraft auras to strike their target. This comes at the cost of maneuverability as these jet bombers have horrendous turning radiuses due to their high speeds.

As a tactical squadron, these bombers come with unlimited reserves, but also a long five-and-a-half-minute preparatory delay and a non-rechargeable engine boost. Despite these drawbacks, the Canberra jet bombers remain the most powerful strike squadron in ''Eagle's'' arsenal. Thus, captains should prioritize using this squadron whenever possible, incorporating other standard and jet squadrons between tactical strikes.

''Eagle's'' jet torpedo bombers are also powerful strike squadrons that are capable of inflicting significant damage. They feature the same speeds of up to 326 knots as the jet bombers but with fewer hit points per plane as well as the same poor maneuverability and turning circles. Each strike consists of 2 planes that drop 2 torpedoes on each. The Mk. XVIII torpedoes go 40 knots and deal up to 7800 damage with a 66% flood chance, and landing these torpedoes is aided by a very tight and narrow drop spread. While the torpedoes do not converge in on one point like the other Royal Navy torpedo bombers, they drop nearly side-by-side and run in a tight parallel path, making it nearly impossible for targets to evade completely unscathed.

These attack jets are the fastest squadrons in ''Eagle’s'' arsenal with a maximum speed of 354 knots. While the planes have the lowest hit points of all of ''Eagle’s'' squadrons, the squadron consists of three attack jets which each carry 20 rockets. The attack patterns are very unique, with a strike consisting of a short preparation phase followed by three bursts of rockets. The rockets land in a circular manner with each burst progressing farther away to fully cover the circular attack reticle. While these rockets will struggle to penetrate the belts of cruisers and battleships due to only having 28mm of penetration, these rockets are very capable against destroyers and other lightly armored cruisers and aircraft carriers due to a high number of rockets and 2350 damage per rocket while also having a modest 9% fire chance. They are also very effective at defending capture circles due to the high likelihood of landing a rocket on a target within the attack reticle. However due to their high speed, their turning circle is abysmal, leading to an increased chance to overshoot the target.

As with the other tactical squadrons, these attack jets come with unlimited reserves, but also a shorter two-and-a-half-minute preparatory delay and a non-rechargeable engine boost. Despite these drawbacks, the Gloster Meteors remain very capable of inflicting significant damage to destroyers and other lightly armored targets as well as exposed superstructures. Thus, captains should prioritize using this squadron when scouting and hunting destroyers, incorporating other standard and jet squadrons between tactical strikes.

'''Westland Wyvern DB'''

These Wyvern level bombers are identical to the upgraded Wyvern level bombers found on ''Audacious'', except that they are equipped with rocket boosters that allow for more rapid deployment of these squadrons over her tier X counterpart. These squadrons are relatively fast at 177 knots after the end of the rocket boosters at top speed combined with excellent health pools that enable them to hold out amidst anti-aircraft artillery fire. However, due to this speed and high health, the turning radius on these squadrons is lacking. The three level bombers each drop 6 bombs in an attack, dealing a maximum of 6400 damage per bomb with 41mm of penetration and a modest fire chance of 36%. This enables ''Eagle'' to not only stack damage over time between fires and floods on capital ships and heavy cruisers but also to easily strike destroyers providing that captains provide adequate lead on these level bombs as they take longer than regular dive bombs to land. Thus, these squadrons should be utilized while waiting for the tactical jet squadrons to complete their preparation phases and to target ships who just used their damage control party consumable.

HMS ''Eagle'' was an ''Audacious''-class aircraft carrier which saw service with the Royal Navy during the Cold War. She was the eighteenth ship to bear the name, dating back to 1592, and served from 1951 to 1972.

<h4>Background</h4>
The ''Audacious''-class were originally designed as a modified version of the earlier ''Implacable''-class ships with two hangar decks. However, the increasing size of new aircraft meant that the design needed to be considerably enlarged.
Four ships were laid down in 1942-43, but construction progressed slowly as other ship construction took priority. With the end of World War II, two ships were cancelled and work on the remaining two was suspended. Eventually the two ships would be completed as ''Eagle'' and ''Ark Royal'', although their final designs bore little relation to their original plans, or each other.

<h4>Construction</h4>
''Eagle'' was laid down on 24 October 1942 at Harland & Wolff in Belfast with the name ''Audacious''. Construction was slow, with escort vessels and landing craft taking priority in British shipbuilding plans. She was still not complete when the end of World War II brought huge cuts to British shipbuilding programs. One of the cancelled ships, HMS ''Eagle'' was ''Audacious'''s sister ship. On 21 January 1946, ''Audacious'' was renamed ''Eagle'' while still on the slipway. She was launched by Princess Elizabeth on 19 March 1946, but construction paused while the Royal Navy carried out reviews of carrier design. ''Eagle'' was eventually completed on 1 October 1951 to a design that was similar to the original plans.

<h4>Service</h4>
''Eagle'' started her sea trials on 31 October 1951, and was accepted into service on 1 March 1952. Her initial air group consisted of Supermarine Attacker fighter jets, Blackburn Firebrand strike aircraft and Fairey Firefly ASW aircraft. In September, she took part in the first major NATO naval exercise, Exercise Mainbrace, with the objective of convincing Denmark and Norway that they could be protected from Soviet attack.

She spent a brief period in the Mediterranean in early 1953, returning to the UK for the Fleet Review celebrating the coronation of Queen Elizabeth II. She briefly rejoined the Mediterranean Fleet in February 1954, but returned to the UK again in May.
Between June 1954 and February 1955 she was under refit at Devonport Dockyard. She emerged with a 5.5° angled flight deck and mirror landing system to help her operate jet aircraft. On 1 November 1956, ''Eagle''’s air group of Sea Hawks, Wyverns and Sea Venoms began attacks on Egyptian airfields and positions during the Anglo-French attempt to seize the Suez Canal. Her air group flew 621 sorties during the Suez Crisis.

<h4>Rebuild</h4>
It had been planned to give ''Eagle'' a major rebuild, similar to that of ''Victorious'', but the excessive cost and time overruns meant that a more limited rebuild was carried out. From 1959 to May 1964 she was rebuilt at Devonport, gaining a fully angled 8° flight deck, steam catapults, and a fully rebuilt island structure and modern radar systems. The addition of new systems meant that she also needed AC power systems in addition to her existing DC systems. She also gained air conditioning and individual bunks for crewmen, a novelty in the Royal Navy at the time. The growing size of aircraft, and the need for more workshop space, meant that her air group had been reduced to thirty-five fixed wing aircraft and ten helicopters. The refit was officially intended to extend her life for a further 10 years, although privately the Royal Navy assessment was that this was an unrealistic aim.

She returned to service in 1964, sailing for the Far East to help contain Indonesian aggression during the Indonesia-Malaysia Confrontation, before undergoing another brief refit at Devonport in 1966-67.

''Eagle'' was originally intended to receive a further refit that would have enabled her to comfortably operate the F-4 Phantom. She had already operated Phantoms on a trial basis and would need only minor modifications to her flight deck. Although a minimal refit to allow operation of Phantoms was estimated to cost around £5 million, the total cost of a full refit and the aircraft would cost much more. In February 1972, it was decided that the cost of the refit, and the manpower requirements and cost of operating two fleet carriers, were too much for the UK to afford.

<h4>Decommissioning</h4>
In 1966 the decision was made to run-down the RN fixed-wing carrier fleet. ''Eagle'' was paid off in January 1972 at Portsmouth and was stripped of reusable equipment. She was then towed to Devonport where she was laid up in the River Tamar, officially in reserve but in reality anything usable had already been stripped to keep ''Ark Royal'' operational. She was sold for scrap in 1978 and towed to Cairnryan on 14 October, and her mooring place was taken by the recently decommissioned ''Ark Royal''.

Eagle — U.K. Tech Tree Tier 11 Aircraft Carrier.

An aircraft carrier, laid down as HMS Audacious, was upgraded during the construction process to carry jet aircraft and entered service as HMS Eagle. In 1954–1955, after a short service in the Mediterranean, the carrier underwent a second refurbishment, during which she was fitted with a small, angled flight deck. The ship participated in the Suez Crisis. The ship underwent her next significant overhaul in 1959–1964. She received an increased angled flight deck and anti-aircraft missile system. As a result, the full water displacement exceeded 54,000 tons.
