<h4>The Ship</h4>
Maya was one of four Takao-class heavy cruisers in service with the Imperial Japanese Navy during the Second World War. Based on Atago, she trades a main battery turret for improved AA and a wide selection of consumables. The most notable are her Main Battery Reload Booster and Repair Party. She also has the choice between Defensive AA Fire or the same Hydroacoustic Search as carried by cruisers of Tier VIII and above.
Whilst Maya is a sister ship of Atago, she has a slower rudder shift, taking 10 seconds for the rudder to fully travel. With a turning circle of 780 meters, this can make avoiding incoming fire and moving in confined areas difficult. Although she may be sluggish when turning, Maya is fast in a straight line, with few Tier VII cruisers rivaling her 35.5 knot top speed. She can relocate quickly when needed or chase down isolated enemies, and easily keep pace with her team’s destroyers. With captain skills her concealment can be brought down to 11.2km which combined with her speed to allow Maya to reach advantageous firing positions or escape from dangerous positions.

<h4>Armor</h4>
Ship Stats
Despite sharing Atago's overall armor scheme, Maya carries thinner armor compared to her Tier VIII sister. Her bow and stern are 16mm thick, which bounces most cruiser AP from tiers V to IX, but provides no protection against battleship AP or HE shells. Citadel armor varies from 102mm along the engine room spaces to 127mm around the magazines. There is also some extra protection provided by the presence of torpedo bulges along the length of her citadel, which can result in shells detonating before penetrating the main armor belt. Despite this, Maya's citadel presents a long and tempting target. As with any cruiser, showing too much broadside can result in taking serious amounts of damage.
<div class="b-popup"><div class="b-popup_head js-tech-nav_head"><div><h2>Hull Information</h2></div><span class="b-tech-nav_arrow"></span></div><div class="b-popup_content" style="display: none;"><div>
These flaws are partially offset by Maya's large health pool, exceeded only by French cruiser Toulon in tier. Mayas ability to absorb hits is further enhanced by her access to the Repair Party consumable, which allows her to stay fighting for an extended period. Her repair party is the same as Atago’s, queuing 50% of penetration damage and 33% of citadel damage received as well as all fire and flood damage. This repair party is active for 28 seconds allowing Maya to potentially repair 5488hp for each use of her repair party. With her 2 base charges Maya can potentially repair almost 11000 hp and this number can be increased up to 19,700 with combat signals and captain skills.

<h4>Armament</h4>
<div style="border: 2px solid rgba(212,175,55,0.8); border-radius: 3px; margin-bottom: 1em; overflow: hidden;">
Mayas guns share the traits of other Japanese cruisers. Her guns are accurate, with destroyer dispersion, but they reload and turn slowly. The standard reload for Maya is a slow 16.5 seconds. She also has four turrets compared to the five carried by Myoko and Atago, which means a lower broadside weight and the lowest sustained main battery damage output of all Tier VII cruisers. She carries a Main Battery Reload Booster which cuts her reload time in half for 15 seconds, this provides an increase to her firepower allowing for one extra full reload during use. Finally, Maya's main battery range is a relatively short 15.3km.

Each HE round hits hard with excellent fire chance. With sustained firing Maya's shells are capable of setting an average of 4.9 fires per minute. While this is amongst the lowest in tier, with captain skills, combat signals and her Main Battery Reload Booster this rises to 8.7 fires per minute, rivaling even the faster firing 152mm gunned ships for short periods. Maya's AP rounds are merely adequate, and much worse than New Orleans. While they can deal citadel damage on broadside targets, they offer less utility against angled or heavily armored ships.
<div style="border: 2px solid rgba(212,175,55,0.8); border-radius: 3px; margin-bottom: 1em; overflow: hidden;">

</div>

Maya carries four quadruple torpedo mounts. The torpedo launchers have Atago's improved firing angles, allowing one set on each broadside to fire 37 degrees from the bow and stern. However, firing both launchers from the same side still requires showing broadside. Maya’s torpedoes travel at a speed of 76 knots out to a range of 8km. This two kilometer reduction compared to Atago means that Maya is unable to effectively fire her torpedoes from stealth.

<h4>Anti-aircraft </h4>
</div></div></div>
Whilst Maya has improved anti-aircraft defenses with an extra pair of 127mm guns on each side, the majority of her AA batteries consist of 25mm cannon mounts. These weapons can only reach out to 2.5km, at which range enemy squadrons will already be on their attack run and as such present little deterrence to enemy carriers.

<h4>Anti-Submarine</h4>
<div style="border: 2px solid rgba(212,175,55,0.8); border-radius: 3px; margin-bottom: 1em; overflow: hidden;">
Maya's ASW attack consists of 9 depth charges dropped from the stern in a line at 1 second intervals. Her depth charges cause some of the highest damage at Tier VII, with a direct hit causing 4,600 damage. This is higher than many destroyers at her tier. Because she carries depth charges, Maya must approach close to a submerged target in order to attack them, which can put her at risk of receiving damage from the submarine or any supporting enemies.

<h4>Battle performance </h4>
<div style="border: 2px solid rgba(212,175,55,0.8); border-radius: 3px; margin-bottom: 1em; overflow: hidden;">
Maya presents a slightly modified version of the standard Japanese heavy cruiser playstyle. To obtain the best results, captains need to use effective positioning and ammunition selection, as well as hit point and consumable management to extend her time in battle and compensate for her low base damage output. A well timed Main Battery Reload Booster can allow Maya to score multiple citadel hits or set several fires in short order, crippling unwary cruisers and taxing battleship Damage Control Parties. Maya can use her improved Hydroacoustic Search consumable to detect enemy destroyers up to 5km away or provide advance warning of ships lurking around corners and behind islands. Despite the Hydroacoustic Search Maya is not well suited to close quarters brawls where her slow reload, bad turret traverse and mediocre maneuverability will hold her back from being effective.

</div>

Maya relies heavily on her HE shells at medium range for the majority of her damage, setting fires on battleships or directly damaging lighter ships. Where possible captains should be aware of the situation and potential targets. With some luck each HE volley can potentially set a fire, causing her to be a threat to even the largest enemy ships. Should the target extinguish any fires, captains should shift their fire to another target for a volley or two before returning to their original target with their Main Battery Reload Booster in order to hopefully set multiple fires in short order.

Maya's torpedoes can be devastating when they hit a target, but their shorter range and faster speed compared to other Japanese cruisers limits their usefulness as area denial weapons or for covering an escape whilst kiting away. Instead, they should be used against specific targets at shorter ranges. Their higher speed makes evading them a tricky task for larger vessels or those which are starting from a stationary position.

There are two slots where captains might wish to consider alternative options. In slot 2 Engine Room Protection reduces the chances of becoming immobilized or Hydroacoustic Search Modification 1 (available for 17,000 coal from the armory) will increase the active time of her Hydroacoustic Search consumable.

In slot 3, Main Battery Modification 2 will help to boost the slow turret rotation times to a more usable level. Aiming Systems Modification 1 can also be useful although the accuracy of Maya's guns mean it is not a required upgrade and taking this upgrade means captains should take the Grease the Gears skill.

A standard Japanese cruiser captain will generally fit in well with Maya, although torpedo skills will not provide the same benefit to Maya as other ships. At least one of Grease the Gears or Main Battery Modification 2 should be used.
If players are using a captain specifically for Maya then they should pick skills which will improve her consumables, main battery reload time and turret rotation times. Last Stand is also recommended to help prevent Maya losing her rudder control.

The Hydroacoustic Search consumable is recommended in slot 2 due to its increased utility and the short range of the majority of Maya's anti-aircraft guns.

The signal choices for Maya should be used to improve her fire starting and increase the action time and effect of her consumables. India X-Ray and Victor Lima signals boost Maya's chances of starting fires. Sierra Mike allows Maya to reach speeds up to 37 knots. India Delta increases the amount of health recovered when using her repair party.

Design
Originally planned to be built as Myoko class cruisers, Maya and her sister ships were redesigned into the newer Takao class heavy cruisers. This new design was created to address many of the issues with the previous classes as well as incorporate knowledge learned from the experimental cruiser Yūbari. The new hull design was very similar to those prior, but it featured a shorter and thicker armour belt as well as deck mounted torpedo launchers instead of hull mounted tubes. The new cruisers were also designed to achieve higher maximum speeds than their Allied counterparts.

The Takao class was the first class of cruisers designed to carry the new 203mm guns which were later fitted onto most Japanese heavy cruisers. These guns were originally designed to be dual purpose and could elevate as high as 70 degrees although Maya had her guns limited to 55 degrees. Like the Myoko class, Maya and her sisters had their main armament mounted in a pyramidal group forward and a superfiring pair in the aft.

It wasn’t until the first Myoko class cruiser was completed that the Japanese designers realised that the new ships would be over the 10,000 ton weight limit. Despite lighter alloys and welding being utilised much more during construction, the new ships were still over the design weight and as a result, suffered from lower speeds and stability issues. To help alleviate this, the planned torpedo armament was reduced from twelve torpedo tubes mounted in four triple launchers to eight torpedo tubes in four double launchers. Later refits and upgrades increased the hull strength and stability of the Takao class ships.

SERVICE

Originally ordered as Vessel Number 11, Maya was laid down at the Kawasaki Shipyards in Kobe on 4 December 1928, she was launched on 8 November 1930 and commissioned into the Imperial Japanese Navy on 30 June 1932. Maya was named for Mount Maya near Kobe in Hyogo Prefecture where she was built.  She was assigned to the Yokosuka Naval District as part of the IJN 2nd Fleet during the 1930s. Unlike her sister ships Takao and Atago, her pre-war modifications were limited to hull strengthening and minor upgrades to equipment.

At the start of the Pacific War Maya was assigned to support the invasions of Malaya and the Philippines. In early 1942, Maya and her sister ships were heavily involved in operations in the Dutch East Indies trying to prevent Allied shipping from fleeing to Australia. During this time she was involved in the destruction of several merchant ships as well as destroyers and small warships. After the conclusion of the East Indies Campaign, Maya returned to Japan to undergo a refit at Yokosuka Naval Arsenal where she received additional AA guns.

In April 1942 Maya was one of the ships which unsuccessfully attempted to pursue the US Task Force 16.2 after the Doolittle Raid on Tokyo. In June 1942, Maya took part in the Aleutians Campaign in the North Pacific, escorting convoys and providing fire support during the invasion of Attu Island.

During Summer 1942 Maya was deployed to Truk to support fighting in the Solomons Campaign and bombarded the US base at Henderson Field on Guadalcanal. She was present during the Battle of Eastern Solomons and the Battle of Santa Cruz but played no direct part in the combat. In November 1942 she was sent to reinforce the Japanese 8th Fleet at Shortland Island and participated in the second bombardment of Henderson Field on 14 November. During the return from the mission Maya was attacked by Dauntless aircraft from USS Enterprise, whilst she took no damage from bombs, one of the aircraft crashed into Maya leading to a fire and several casualties.

Maya returned to Yokosuka for repairs and refit in January 1943 after which she was assigned to operations in the North Pacific. On 26 March Maya took part in the inconclusive Battle of the Komandorski Islands near Kamchatka Peninsula. As a result of the battle the Japanese aborted their attempted resupply of the garrison on Attu Island. Maya returned to Yokosuka for repairs and returned to the North pacific in April 1943 and assisted in the evacuation of Kiska in summer 1943 after US forces retook Attu Island.

After a further refit in Yokosuka where additional AA weapons were added, Maya returned to Truk with her sister ship Chokai. She arrived in late September and was involved in shuttling supplies and reinforcements to the Japanese base at Rabaul in Papua New Guinea. During the US carrier raid on Rabaul on 5 November, Maya was hit by a bomb which started a major fire. Seventy crew were killed and eighty injured. After temporary repairs at Rabaul Maya returned to Truk and then to Yokosuka, arriving on 5 December 1943.

During this repair it was decided to convert Maya to an anti-aircraft cruiser. Her Number Three turret and aircraft hangar were removed and replaced with extra anti-aircraft weapons, her twin torpedo launchers were also upgraded to quad launchers during this refit. Following the refit her new AA battery consisted of twelve 12.7-cm Type 89 guns in six twin mounts, forty-eight 25-mm Type 96 guns in thirteen triple and nine single mounts, and thirty-six 13.2-mm Type 93 machine guns in single mounts. She also mounted a Type 22 search radar. Before departing Kobe, Maya embarked a pair of E13A1 "Jake" floatplanes, loaded troops and supplies and a monkey donated by Kure Zoo. The aircrew would teach the monkey to salute officers during the voyage, to the annoyance of the officers.

Between April and June 1944, Maya was involved in the defence of the Philippines, culminating in the Battle of the Philippine Sea. She was slightly damaged during the battle and returned to Yokosuka on 25 June 1944. The aircrew, and their pet monkey, disembarked and additional 25mm anti-aircraft guns were embarked. After this refit, Maya was deployed to Singapore in July 1944. On 20 October she met up with the fleet in preparation for Operation Sho-Go and what would later be known as the Battle of Leyte Gulf.

In the early hours of 23 October the fleet was passing through the Palawan Passage when they were attacked by a pair of US submarines. USS Darter torpedoed Atago and Takao, sinking the former and forcing Takao to return to Singapore where she would remain until the end of the war. USS Dace mistook Maya for a battleship and launched six torpedoes at her, hitting four. Secondary explosions followed and she listed heavily to port and stopped in the water. Approximately eight minutes after being hit by the torpedoes, Maya sank. Her surviving crew were rescued by the destroyer '’Akishimo and transferred to the battleship Musashi where they would be sunk again with 607 crew being rescued a second time.
