The ships featured an increased draft to improve their seaworthiness. Kamikaze was laid down under the name Destroyer No. 1 in 1921. Seven years later, the destroyer received her own name. In World War II, she was involved in the Aleutian Islands Campaign and escorted ship convoys to remote outposts in the Kuril Islands. In 1945, Kamikaze was reassigned to the Combined Fleet, and she formed part of the escort for both Ise-class battleships as they sailed from Singapore to Japan.</p><p> </p></div>
<!-- A typical Japanese destroyer that was built using the experience gained during World War I. She boasted a very high speed and powerful torpedo armament. However, her anti-aircraft suite was very weak and her main battery guns had a fairly low rate of fire.-->

Pros
AA Sidebar Warning Insert
* Pro 1
Kamikaze is identical to Kamikaze R and Fujin and roughly analogous to Tier V tech tree ship Minekaze.  She has powerful, fast reloading torpedoes that travel 7.0km at 68 knots with a maximum damage of 14,400 points, making her a serious threat to any ship she can spot.  With a base detection of 6.2km, she has a significant spotting advantage over anything else in her tier that isn't a fellow Japanese destroyer, allowing her to deliver her torpedoes to unsuspecting targets.
* Pro 2

Her guns are far more situational, with four 120mm barrels that have a 10 second reload and do 2000 points of damage per shell, making them only useful against other Japanese destroyers in an even fight.  Engaging an American or Russian destroyer in a straight up 1v1 gunfight is a one-way ticket back to the Port screen.  The guns are decent for harassing other ships using island or smoke cover, but captains must be very careful not to draw unwanted attention to themselves.  Mobility-wise, Kamikaze handles like most other destroyers, with 37.5 knot top speed and a rudder shift time of 2.9 second and a 550m turning radius, faster than most American destroyers at tier, but slower than the Russian destroyers.
Cons
* Con 1
* Con 2

|Pros=<!-- write list of positive points below. use * as in ordinary wiki-list. -->
*Better turret traverse than Minekaze.
*Bigger health pool than Minekaze.
*As a premium ship, it makes more credits and experience than Minekaze.
*Torpedoes are faster and deal more damage than Minekaze torpedoes.
*Has three turrets that turn frontally, as opposed to two on the Minekaze.

|Cons=<!-- write list of negative points below. use * as in ordinary wiki-list. -->

The choice of which Signal Flags to mount will confer to the individual preference of each captain, and are subject to great variation, although there are certain flags which are worth the further emphasis. Captains should mount India Yankee to decrease time to extinguish fires, mount November Foxtrot to decrease reload time of consumables, and mount Sierra Mike to increase the ship's maximum speed. To make their torpedoes more potent, captains should mount Juliet Whisky Unaone to increase chance of causing flooding and Juliet Charlie to mitigate risk to magazine detonation from mounting the former flag. If captains wish to buff their primary artillery, they are encouraged to mount Victor Lima + India X-ray to increase fire chance to HE shells.

Design
</gallery>
The Kamikaze class destroyers were built from an improved and slightly larger Minekaze class design. The newer class featured a widened beam to allow for a larger superstructure. At the time of construction, the Kamikaze class destroyers carried the same machinery and armament as the preceding class, but the location of the aft torpedo tubes and main guns were altered. Numerous anti-aircraft guns and depth charge launchers were mounted on the ships before and during World War II which further increased their displacement. Consequently, Kamikaze and her sister ships suffered from a lower top speed.
</div></div></div>

Kamikaze was laid down at the Mitsubishi Dockyard in Nagasaki in late 1921.  The ship was commissioned into the Imperial Japanese Navy on 28 December 1922 under the name Destroyer No. 1 and was renamed to Kamikaze six years later.

Service
<gallery>
Having been constructed and launched from 1922 to 1923, the nine Kamikaze class destroyers were obsolete by 1937 when war with China began. As older ships, they were primarily used as escorts for troop transports and invasion support. Their roles were expanded during World War Two to include escort of merchant ships, and later, once the system was implemented, convoy escort.

Attrition was high and only one ship, Kamikaze herself, managed to survive the war intact. She conducted several successful escort missions towards the end of the war in 1945 around Singapore. Notably, she engaged the submarine USS Hawkbill (SS-366) on 18 July 1945. The submarine attempted to torpedo a convoy off the coast of Malaya. The torpedoes missed and Kamikaze gave chase, dropping several depth charges that severely damaged the submarine and partially blew her out of the water.  Hawkbill was able to get away, though.  After the war, the ships' respective captains, Hitoshi Kasuga and Francis Scanland, wrote to each other regarding the battle and became friends.

After the war, Kamikaze became a repatriation ship returning Japanese military personnel back to the Japanese home islands from Singapore, Bangkok and Saigon throughout late 1945 and early 1946. Kamikaze ran aground and was wrecked on 7 June 1946 while coming to the rescue of the ex-Kunashiri, another repatriation vessel, off Cape Omaezaki, Shizuoka Prefecture.  She was sold off and broken up for scrap in 1947.

Of the remaining Kamikaze class destroyers, four were sunk by submarine, three by air, and one, Hayate, was sunk by shore battery during the invasion of Wake Island in 1941.

Kamikaze — Japan Premium Tier V Destroyer.

A second group of 9 Minekaze-class destroyers, also known as the Kamikaze class, was built between 1921 and 1925. In 1945, Kamikaze was reassigned to the Combined Fleet, and she formed part of the escort for both Ise-class battleships as they sailed from Singapore to Japan.
