Amagi — Japan Tech Tree Tier VIII Battleship.
With the outbreak of World War I, Japan started designing battlecruisers. Between 1916 and 1918, about 20 variants of a preliminary draft project were developed. As a result of the Washington Naval Conference, the construction of battleships was canceled, but Japan was allowed to convert two battlecruisers into aircraft carriers. The conversion of Amagi commenced in 1923, but the hull on the stocks of Yokosuka was destroyed by the Great Kantō earthquake.
Pros
- Decent mobility: Speed of 30.0 knots, average handling for a Tier VIII battleship
- Accurate and long-ranged heavy guns: 10 410mm guns with predictable ballistics and average sigma
- Comfortable overall ergonomics: Combination of high mobility and a heavy broadside with an extended 254mm belt running to the stern, she can escape or reposition against the enemy while using all her firepower.
Cons
- Still, a bit of a “master of none” ship: Newer Tier VIII battleships like those of France or Germany may have more range and speed, while those of the United States may have more reliable firepower
- Relatively thin armour: Her main belt of only 203mm thickness renders her vulnerable to large-calibre enemy AP. With an armour layout similar to Nagato, 32mm plating on most of the hull renders her vulnerable to HE damage
- Poor concealment: Her default detectability by sea is 16.8km… nothing new here!
