Brindisi — Italian Tier IX cruiser.

A further development of the preceding project, with the main battery reinforced by adding the fourth main gun turret. The elevation angle of the 203 mm guns made it possible to fire up at hostile aircraft.

Tier IX Italian heavy cruiser Brindisi continues the shift from lower tier Italian cruisers that Almalfi introduced, with improved firepower and survivability characteristics. While the playstyle is not drastically different, Brindisi trains captains to further become familiar with high tier Italian cruiser gameplay and eventually be ready for Venezia.

Armament:

While she is a tier higher, Brindisi gets the same guns found on her predecessor but with another turret, bringing up her gun count to twelve. While her SAP and AP shells are the same, with 5,200 and 4,800 alpha respectively, the higher gun count means her full salvo alpha strike is much higher. However, due to the slower base reload of 20 seconds, her damage per minute is not much higher to that of Almalfi. Her AP shells are mediocre as they lack penetration and damage but should be used on broadsiding targets.

As a cruiser that primarily focuses on using SAP shells, alpha strike is much more important than damage per minute, which is more evident through Brindisi’s full salvo dealing a maximum of 62,400 SAP damage. As with the other Italian cruisers, SAP shells deal massive damage against targets that have not been saturated. However, as the game progresses and ships take more damage from other allies, damage saturation kicks in and the effectiveness of SAP shells diminishes. Thus, target selection is important, shooting at unsaturated targets first to maximize damage and influencing the outcome of the game through dealing efficient damage.

Like the other high tier Italian cruisers, Brindisi carries the signature slow but sneaky Italian torpedoes. These torpedoes have mediocre damage and speed but have a good range of 13.5 km and decent base reload of 95 seconds. As they have low alpha damage, these torpedoes should be used as zoning tools and sent out whenever they are reloaded. They compliment Brindisi’s open water playstyle and can catch opponents off guard with their low detect of 1.1km.

Hull:

As a cruiser that likes to play on open water, Brindisi gets an improved armor scheme from her predecessor and can take more focused fire without suffering massive damage. Her bow and stern are 25mm, albeit with an icebreaker that can protect against badly aimed shots. She has an interesting deck armor scheme with an upper and lower section. The upper section is towards the front of the ship and is covered in 27 mm, allowing battleships with 406mm or higher caliber to overmatch its entirety. The lower section located towards the back of the ship is 30mm and can only be overmatched by 457mm and higher caliber guns. The biggest strength of her armor is her 30mm side plating that is able to bounce shells from most Tier IX battleships that do not have 457 mm caliber guns when sufficiently angled. However, her base health pool of 44,800 is not much higher than that of her predecessor.

Armor is not the only thing that makes Brindisi an improvement over her predecessor in surviving throughout a battle. Her maneuverability is similar, with a good base speed of 36.7 knots and signature tight turning radius alongside great rudder shift time. Improvements to her armor alongside great handling and maneuverability allow Brindisi to dance around the battlefield, bouncing and dodging salvos with ease.

Consumables:

Brindisi carries the same consumables as her predecessor, with Exhaust Smoke Generator, Fighter/Spotting Aircraft, Repair Party, and Submarine Surveillance. All of these consumables enhance Brindisi’s effect on the battlefield.

The signature Exhaust Smoke Generator serves as a way for Brindisi to be concealed and aids her in pushing enemy ships, shooting from a distance while being concealed, as well as disengaging from bad situations. The consumable comes with 2 base charges of exhaust smoke that last 40 seconds and have a long cooldown of 180 seconds. As a smoke screen that follows the ship when active, it is important to note the smoke fire penalty of 9.7 km. If an enemy ship is within that range, Brindisi will be spotted for 20 seconds after firing, essentially wasting precious seconds on the smoke generator.

While she has the option to equip a Fighter, Spotting Aircraft is the recommended consumable for this slot. As her range is quite bad at 17.1km, Spotting Aircraft aids Brindisi in engaging with ships at long distance by increasing her range to 20.6 km.

A huge upgrade from Almalfi is the Repair Party consumable, allowing Brindisi to sustain damage taken through heals. The consumable is standard for a Tier IX cruiser, healing 14% of her max health over 28 seconds with a 80 second cooldown.

Lastly, Submarine Surveillance is useful for detecting submarines and aiding allied ships to drop ASW to deal with them. The consumable has a 7km range with a 20 second duration. Brindisi also is equipped with ASW airstrikes and can comfortably deal with submarines even though she lacks a hydroacoustic search consumable. SAP shells are also highly effective against submarines when they surface.

Anti-Aircraft:

The Italian tech tree is not known for their great Anti-Aircraft defenses and Brindisi is no exception to this. While her medium range dps is high at 430.5, she only has 4.6km of AA range and 6 flak count. This especially hurts as Brindisi is spotted at 7.5km by aircraft and cannot stop strikes entirely. Grouping with allied ships to overlap anti-aircraft auras is recommended in games with carriers. Using smokes to remain unspotted can be an option when under heavy focus but is not a fool proof method against attentive carrier players who drop according to the direction of the smoke.

Battle Performance:

While appearing to play similarly to other nation cruisers that specialize in open water kiting and farming, Brindisi is different due to the presence of the unique SAP ammunition. She cannot farm targets the same way that cruisers with HE can do and the inability to light fires can be detrimental against armored targets but her massive alpha strike and ability to delete destroyers make up for this weakness. Brindisi is reliant on allied spotting but her presence alone makes it hard for enemy destroyers to contest objectives without getting slapped.

The lack of Hydroacoustic Search and Surveillance Radar usually means a cruiser lacks utility but Brindisi makes up for this by having Exhaust Smoke Generator to play closer and support her destroyers in key areas and Submarine Surveillance to help her team against a class that is frustrating to deal with alone.

The combination of great maneuverability, exhaust smokes, torpedoes, and SAP make for a strong open water threat that is able to strike unaware targets with massive alpha damage. Overall, Brindisi is a capable ship that rewards good positioning and ambushing targets.

Pros:

Cons:

  • Low HP pool
  • Long main battery reload time
  • Poor anti-aircraft defenses
  • SAP shells lose effectiveness if they cannot penetrate or hit saturated areas

Research

Availability of researchable upgrades for Brindisi is as follows:

  • Hull: Upgrade to Hull (B) for a faster rudder shift time and improved AA. Research of this module unlocks progression to Venezia.
  • Gun Fire Control System: Upgrade to SDT 9 mod. 2 for an extra 10% range on the main battery.
