Special

Mikoyan — Soviet special premium Tier V cruiser.

In the summer of 1932, a Soviet commission was sent to Italy as part of naval cooperation to find a ship that would become the basis for a Soviet light cruiser project. Raimondo Montecuccoli was chosen as the prototype. The first draft design based on this ship provided six 180 mm guns. Eventually, the development of this project led to the emergence of the Project 26 cruiser.

Player Opinion

Performance

An atypical light cruiser, Mikoyan combines the characteristics of Tallinn with her tech-tree counterpart Kotovsky. While she plays similarly to the latter, she has her unique quirks.

Hull

Sharing the same hull as Kotovsky, Mikoyan’s survivability is horrific. Her 35 mm main belt is laughably terrible, being easily penetrated by HE shells from battleships, and even the HE shells of German cruisers and secondaries. In addition, the belt extends far along her hull, allowing ships to easily hit her citadel. While the thin belt can be a blessing, being too thin to arm battleship AP shells at a flat angle, she shouldn’t try her luck. Her 13 mm bow and stern are overmatched by the 190 mm+ guns carried by most heavy cruisers in her tier spread. Her measly 21,000 HP pool is the worst of all Tier V cruisers, and even worse than some lower-tier cruisers. The best defense for Mikoyan is not getting hit in the first place.

Mikoyan’s maneuverability is typical of a Russian cruiser. She can reach a high speed of 35.5 knots, but her large turning circle of 830 m leaves her vulnerable during turns. Her rudder shift is quite good, at 5.9 seconds. Unlike most Russian cruisers, Mikoyan sports rather good concealment, reaching 10.4 km when fully specced. This gives her more breathing room in terms of picking her engagements.

Armament

Mikoyan is armed with six 180 mm guns in three twin turrets. Her AP shells feature the best penetration of Tier V cruisers, high damage at 4,550, a short fuse time, and improved ricochet angles at 50-65°. Combined with their superb ballistics and long firing range, she can comfortably engage targets from afar. Her guns have a slow turret traverse, taking 22.5 seconds to rotate 180°, but great rearward firing angles, making her a decent kiter. The main flaw in Mikoyan’s gunnery is her reload. Her guns have a long 13.2 s reload, making her damage output poor, especially that of her HE shells. While her HE shells have standard characteristics for their caliber (2,500 damage, 11% fire chance), her HE DPM is one of the worst of all Tier V cruisers, making AP her primary ammunition. Combined with a low gun count, captains should expect poor salvos from time to time.

Mikoyan’s secondaries are forgettable. With only four 100 mm guns, they pose little to no threat. If captains find themselves in the range to use their secondaries, it will often end poorly for them.

Mikoyan’s torpedoes are a last ditch weapon. Mounting the same torpedoes as Kirov and Kotovsky, they have average characteristics for their tier, save for their short range of only 4 km. They should only be used if Mikoyan finds herself in a close-quarters fight, or to ambush unsuspecting opponents.

Mikoyan’s AA is laughable. Her DPS values are low across the board, and her range is limited to just 4 km. With no access to Defensive AA FireWhile active, the damage per second of large caliber anti-aircraft guns is increased. or Catapult FighterWhile active, a group of fighter planes circles the ship providing protection by attacking incoming enemy aircraft., her best defense against enemy aircraft is friendly AA cover.

Mikoyan carries two depth charges located in the rear, one dropped to the left and one to the right. Each depth charge deals up to 2,400, with a 10% fire chance and 15% flooding chance. Like most ships with ship-mounted depth charges, she should not actively use them against submarines unless she can do so without harm.

Consumables

Mikoyan carries a standard Damage Control PartyWhen activated, instantly repairs fires, floods, and incapacitations, and prevents more for the duration., Hydroacoustic SearchWhile active, detects all enemy ships and torpedoes within the specified radius, without regard of obstacles such as smoke and terrain., and Spotting AircraftWhile active, a spotter plane circles the ship enhancing main battery firing range.. The Spotting AircraftWhile active, a spotter plane circles the ship enhancing main battery firing range. will assist her in keeping her opponents at a distance. Though it may also be counterproductive, as her vertical dispersion will become even worse at the ranges her spotter allows her to engage at.

Gameplay

Mikoyan is best played at long ranges. Using her great firing range and good AP shells, she can punish cruisers from afar, as well as get decent chunks on battleships. However, her dispersion can make this task difficult at times. Her abysmal survivability prevents her from getting into brawls except in limited situations. In those cases, captains should be prepared to use their torpedoes and other tools at their disposal, or they can expect a quick trip back to port.

Mikoyan is essentially a one-trick pony. She really only excels at long ranges, but her gunnery doesn’t allow her to reach her peak performance at this role. She is a frustrating ship to play due to her poor damage output. Captains looking for ships excelling at long-range combat will find many other choices that do better at this role.

Pros:

  • Powerful AP shells with good damage and very high penetration
  • Fairly comfortable ballistics, high shell velocity and flat arcs
  • Equipped with torpedoes with very wide firing arcs
  • High top speed and good rudder shift
  • Excellent main battery range, which can be further improved with the Spotting AircraftWhile active, a spotter plane circles the ship enhancing main battery firing range. consumable
  • Good concealment

Cons:

  • Only six guns with a long reload, poor DPM
  • Hilariously poor armor, the citadel belt is only 35mm thick and rises above the waterline
  • Very low HP pool
  • Very weak and short ranged AA suite
  • Torpedoes are very short ranged
  • Massive turn radius, Mikoyan bleeds a lot of speed during hard turns
