Chapayev — Soviet Tier VIII cruiser.
A light cruiser with powerful artillery, built under the "Big Fleet" program (Project 68). The ship was slightly slower than her predecessors but significantly surpassed them in armor protection. During her upgrade, the cruiser received considerably enhanced AA defense.

Chapayev is an upgrade over her predecessor, tier VII Shchors, possessing increased armor and nearly doubling in anti-aircraft fire capabilities. And she adds a 12km Surveillance Radar
consumable. She is one of the few ships with the ability to stealth radar.[1] Paired with her twelve, high velocity 152mm guns, Chapayev is a menace to destroyers and other cruisers.
Armament
Chapayev’s main battery is arranged in four turrets, each containing 3 guns, for a total of twelve. The base reload is 8 seconds, with a fire chance of 12%, and base HE pen of 30mm. She excels at dealing with destroyers and other cruisers of the same tier thanks to the blistering 950m/s shell velocity. Against lower tier battleships with 27mm plating, Chapayev also does well. The fire chance allows for consistent damage over time, while the penetration of the high explosive allows for consistent damage. However, her overall damage per minute is less than average. Compared to same-tier Cleveland, Chapayev fires nearly 2 fewer salvos per minute with near identical alpha damage. Her turrets turn slowly for a cruiser, taking 25 seconds to turn a full 180 degrees. In addition, Chapayev carries two quadruple racks of torpedoes. These torpedoes should only be used in an emergency situation, as they have a 4km range. They are good for rushing cruisers, as their alpha strike is almost 18,000, and just three hits will destroy most same tier cruisers.
Armor
Chapayev is coated in 25mm of armor. The only parts of the ship that are not 25mm include the armor belt, which is and the superstructure, which is 13mm. At first, this seems like a welcome upgrade from its much less armored predecessor. However, at tier 8, the gun caliber on battleships begins to increase. Any ship with a caliber higher than 358mm will overmatch Chapayev, resulting in massive amounts of damage. Without a heal to make up the damage, anything taken is permanent. On top of this, while Shchors can sometimes get lucky and take a full salvo of overpenetrations, the increased armor on Chapayev means that fewer shells will overpenetrate.
Anti-Aircraft
The anti-aircraft defenses of Chapayev are slightly worse than average. In particular, she lacks any short range AA.
Performance
Chapayev is best used as a long range high-explosive spammer. Her optimal range is outside of 13 kilometers from any battleship, as this gives the captain time to react to the battleship’s salvo. When the battle has developed and lanes are open, this is the time to start pushing in. Playing the ship at close range will give any battleship player a large, lightly armored target to shoot at. The very good concealment at 10.56km enables Chapayev to disengage and reposition. It also allows her to stealth radar, detecting anything within 12km for 20 seconds. The decent fire chance and high shell velocity creates the perfect opportunity for Chapayev to play at range and deal consistent damage.
Pros:
- Relatively thin ship causes many overpenetrations when hit by battleship AP.
- Very high shell velocity, meaning aiming at range is much easier.
- Good firing angles when moving towards target.
- 30mm of HE pen which can penetrate the armor of same tier cruisers.
- Long-range radar that, with the appropriate captain skills and upgrades, reaches farther than the ship's detection range.
Cons:
- Armor, while improved, is still only average. Citadel remains very large.
- The damage output of her main battery is not improved over the predecessor.
- Less than optimal firing angles when kiting away.
- Massive turning circle and average rudder shift.
- Large size makes her easier to hit.
- Fast but extremely short-ranged torpedoes are only useful as a weapon of desperation.
- Lackluster AA.

Upgrades
The recommended upgrades for Chapayev are as follows:
- Slot 1: Main Armaments Modification 1

- Slot 2: Damage Control System Modification 1

- Slot 3: AA Guns Modification 1

- Slot 4: Steering Gears Modification 1

- Slot 5: Concealment System Modification 1
*
Given her turning radius and range, some captains may prefer to equip Steering Gears Modification 2
into Slot 5 and play Chapayev exclusively at long range. The increased rudder responsiveness will make her a more difficult target to captains who stay alert to incoming fire.

Consumables
Chapayev can equip the following consumables:
- Slot 1: Damage Control Party

- Slot 2: Defensive AA Fire
or Hydroacoustic Search
- Slot 3: Surveillance Radar
