How it Works: Upgrades. 30 Jun 2020

A player earns access to Upgrades at Access Level 9, allowing him to customize and improve each ship's performance to suit his play style. Ships of different tiers have access to different upgrades, described by the tables below. Certain upgrades are unique to certain ship types or nations, or even to a specific ship; check the Notes table columns for more detail.

Managing upgrades

One upgrade can be mounted in each slot. A particular upgrade can be mounted only in its appropriate slot.

An upgrade — mounted or demounted (in Inventory) — can be sold for half of its nominal purchase cost (some upgrades are not purchasable but obtained by other means).
If the desired upgrade is available in Inventory, it may be mounted only from Inventory; an upgrade can be purchased only if one is not available in Inventory.

A mounted upgrade can be demounted to Inventory for 25 Doubloons, or sold. When selling a ship, all upgrades mounted on that ship must either be sold or demounted.
If the amount of Doubloons is insufficient for demounting upgrades when selling a ship, they will be sold for Credits instead.

A mounted upgrade can be demounted to Inventory without any cost if any one of these instances below happens:

  • When a tech-tree ship is sold as part of a line reset. See Research Bureau article for more details.
  • When a rental ship is removed from player's account after the end of the rental period.
  • When a Premium or Special ship is used for exchanging during a Trade-in event.

Base Upgrades

Base upgrades are purchased for credits. Some packages for purchase, challenge rewards, and mission rewards may also grant base upgrades.
During certain events, base upgrades can be purchased for half of their nominal cost.
