Special

Boise — American special premium Tier VII cruiser.

A Brooklyn-class light cruiser. During the attack on Pearl Harbor, the ship was on a patrol mission. World War II saw her engaged in reconnaissance and escort missions, and she participated in the Battle at Cape Esperance, where she was damaged. After repairs, she headed to the Mediterranean Sea, where she covered the landings of Allied troops on Sicily and Taranto. Then, USS Boise returned to the Pacific Ocean, where she fought in the Battle of Leyte Gulf and the Battle of Surigao Strait. Over the war, the cruiser was awarded 11 battle stars. In 1951, the ship was sold to Argentina.

Boise first went on sale 27 July 2018. She was added to the Armory for doubloons with patch 0.8.8.

Boise has many similarities to Tier VII American tech tree cruiser Helena. Comparisons between the two ships are well-earned, given that the two classes are closely related in American light cruiser design and development in the 1930's; anyone used to playing one of them should find the other a comfortable fit as well. There are a few notable differences between the two ships, however: Helena, for instance, has a kilometer more of range on her main battery guns, while Boise gains access to the Specialized Repair TeamsWhile active, restores a percentage of the ship's health points each second. consumable. These aren't the only differences between the two ships, though. They are simply the most notable.

Boise isn't a front line ship, no matter what her outstanding repair ability suggests. She is a light cruiser branch and does not take well to being shot at. Her armor simply isn't adequate protection against battleship shells, and even cruiser shells chew through her health pool all too quickly. As a result, any health regained through the repair consumable can quickly be lost again. Thus, captains should take care to minimize her exposure to the enemy team through careful positioning and map awareness; however, keeping Boise away from harm's reach can be difficult due to her short main battery range. While her 13.6 km range is a smidge better than Atlanta's 13.4 km base range, it falls somewhat short of Helena’s 14.6 km.

The issue of engagement distance can be somewhat mitigated by Boise’s high explosive shells — which can be a bit of a double edged sword due to their high arcing, low velocity nature. On one hand, it's easy to lob the the shells over islands and onto enemy ships since they go into low earth orbit after being fired. On the other hand, these shells take a long time to go up and come down, making it difficult to lead enemy ships that are actively maneuvering. It is noteworthy that Boise’s guns almost require the Inertial Fuse for HE Shells skill in order to dish out good damage with her HE shells. With the skill though, full salvos of her high-explosive rounds can be devastating. Do not, however, underestimate the power of her armor-piercing shells. At close range they can chew up broadsided cruisers.

With only 30 knots of speed to work with, Boise can feel frustratingly slow and shouldn't be relied upon to change positions very quickly. She also handles rather sluggishly, with a large turning radius to go with her lower-than-average speed. These issues are only exacerbated when comparison to Helena.

Boise sacrifices speed, main battery range, anti-aircraft firepower, and handling quality in order to gain access to her Royal Navy-style Specialized Repair TeamsWhile active, restores a percentage of the ship's health points each second.. Captains used to Helena should think carefully about trying to use Boise is the same way.

Pros:

  • Main battery similar to Helena, with massive broadside firepower.
  • Relatively quick turret traverse.
  • Three rear facing turrets allows for effective kiting tactics.
  • Quick rudder shift.
  • Access to Royal Navy-style Specialized Repair TeamsWhile active, restores a percentage of the ship's health points each second. gives her excellent survivability.
  • Good concealment.

Cons:

  • Weak broadside armor.
  • Poor forward turret angles and high shell arcs.
  • Slow for a Tier VII cruiser, with a large turning radius.
  • Short main battery range (even shorter than Helena).
  • Slower main battery reload speed and weaker AA suite than Helena.
  • No torpedo protection.

Research

As a premium ship, Boise has no module upgrades to research.

Optimal Configuration

Upgrades

The recommended upgrades for Boise are as follows:

Slot 4 provides two viable upgrade options. Most captains will find Steering Gears Modification 1 useful for increased maneuverability. Captains who prefer to use islands as cover will likely prefer Propulsion Modification 1 Reduces time to full speed: -50% to time for reaching full power. / Increases engine power when the ship starts moving. in order to reposition more quickly.

Commander Skills

Consumables

Boise can equip the following consumables:

Camouflage

As a premium ship, Boise comes with Default permanent camouflage and a set of permanent combat bonuses.

Signals

Boise is a light cruiser, meaning that most cruiser signals will work for her. Players may want to use signals to boost the fire chance (+1% chance of causing a fire for bombs and shells with a caliber above 160mm. / +0.5% chance of causing a fire for bombs and shells with a caliber below 160mm. +1% chance of causing a fire for bombs and shells with a caliber above 160mm / +0.5% chance of causing a fire for bombs and shells with a caliber below 160mm. / +4% chance of causing flooding.), consumable cool down (-5% reload time on all consumables.), and heal amount (+20% to the amount of HP recovered when the Repair Party consumable is used.).
