Vallejo — American premium Tier IX cruiser.

In the summer of 1941, the Bureau of Ships began to develop a cruiser with dual-purpose main battery guns and an armored deck capable of withstanding attacks from standard bombers. One of the presented designs featured an armor belt and five twin-gun main battery turrets. This project never came to life, and subsequent endeavors to design a cruiser focused on anti-aircraft capabilities led to the development of the Worcester-class ships.

Vallejo was first released on 05 October 2022 with the release of Update 0.11.9 and is available in the armory for Steel 22,000 Steel.

Representing one of the preliminary designs that led to the Worcester-class, Tier IX premium light cruiser Vallejo is a mini Worcester that thinks she’s a Lazo. She features a high damage potential with impressive ballistics for an American cruiser, and serves as a potent plane repellant for her tier. But she lacks any team support ability (besides just farming enemy threats).

Armament

Vallejo is all about farming damage with her main battery. She mounts ten 152mm guns in five twin turrets, the same turrets found on Worcester a tier higher. Vallejo's turrets have an extremely fast traverse, turning 180 degrees in only 7.2 seconds, and feature excellent firing angles to both the front and rear. They also feature one of the fastest reloads of all Tier IX cruisers at 6.1 seconds, although Worcester reloads faster with similar guns. Her 15.7km main battery range is low for the tier and identical to her light cruiser counterpart Seattle, but she carries the Rapid Takeoff Spotter that increases her firing range by 20%.

Vallejo's HE shells are her primary ammunition. Although her per-shell damage and fire chance are low, her fast reload gives her a very high sustained DPM and fires set per minute, just below Seattle. Likewise, her AP shells have a low per-shell damage but high DPM, but her armor penetration is severely lacking. Above 10km she can pen slightly more than Worcester, but at all ranges she is at the bottom of the Tier IX cruiser group. It can still citadel most cruisers at close range, but overall it’s less effective than her HE and typically a last resort.

Compared to other American cruisers, Vallejo's ballistics stand out. While most American cruisers are known for their floaty shells and long flight times, Vallejo's gun performance is comparable to the high tier Russian light cruisers. Although she shares the Americans’ slower initial shell velocity, her low shell drag gives her much flatter arcs and shorter flight times — almost 5 seconds less at 19km. She can’t lob over some islands as well as her American counterparts, but she is much better at hitting agile or longer ranged targets.

With her better ballistics, she also shares the Russian cruisers’ “worse” vertical dispersion. Although she is more prone to over or undershoot targets than other American cruisers, her guns are still reliably accurate.

Like most high tier American cruisers, Vallejo does not carry torpedoes.

Vallejo's ASW defenses are identical to those found on other Tier IX American cruisers. She carries an ASW airstrike while many light cruisers use ship-launched depth charges. Vallejo has two charges that reload in 30 seconds, and each charge drops two bombs per strike that deal up to 4200 damage.

Consumables

Vallejo's consumable suite is about as opposite from typical high tier American cruisers as possible. Beyond the standard cruiser Damage Control Party and Repair Party carried by almost all Tier IX cruisers, she lacks both Surveillance RadarWhile active, detects all enemy ships within the specified radius, disregarding obstacles such as smoke and terrain. and Hydroacoustic SearchWhile active, detects all enemy ships and torpedoes within the specified radius, without regard of obstacles such as smoke and terrain., and mounts Defensive AA FireWhile active, the damage per second of large caliber anti-aircraft guns is increased. by default. Like on other American ships, Vallejo starts with an extra charge of her Defensive AA Fire consumable. Players should note that, while Vallejo’s Repair Party is mostly similar to those of other Tier IX cruisers, she can only heal 10% of citadel damage received (rather than the “normal” 33%).

Additionally, she features Lazo’s Rapid Takeoff SpotterExtends the main battery's firing range. Short action time and high reload speed. rather than the normal Spotting AircraftWhile active, a spotter plane circles the ship enhancing main battery firing range.. Although it’s only active for 60 seconds, it reloads in just 10 seconds rather than the typical four minutes. When active, it extends her main battery firing range by 20%. Like Lazo, the extremely fast cooldown gives her an extra range boost almost on demand. But the shorter action time makes it easier to run out of charges before the end of the battle. With Superintendent and the coal Spotting Aircraft Modification 1 Increases the action time of the Spotting Aircraft, Rapid Takeoff Spotter, and High-Precision Spotter consumables.: +30% action time. upgrade, Vallejo has just under 8 minutes of Spotting Aircraft action time.

Maneuverability

Vallejo is not particularly agile. She is one of the slowest cruisers at Tier IX, with a base top speed of only 32.5 knots. Most cruisers and destroyers — and even some battleships — in her matchmaking range can easily outpace her. Her 10.7 second rudder shift is marginally faster than average for the tier, but by far the slowest of all American light cruisers. Her 740mm turning circle is among the best at Tier IX, similar to those of Worcester and Seattle.

Vallejo must be aware of her surroundings and the developing battle, as she struggles to reposition if forced to kite away from a push or chase a kiting enemy flank.

Survivability

Vallejo's 44,000 health is respectable for a light cruiser, but well below average for Tier IX cruisers overall. Combined with her Repair Party, she can survive longer than most of her light cruiser counterparts, but she should still avoid taking damage whenever possible.

Most of her armor is rather weak as well. Her bow, stern, and upper belt are only 25mm thick, offering little protection against all but the smallest caliber cruiser HE and battleship AP. Most battleships can overmatch these sections, dealing large amounts of damage and potentially reaching her citadel. Due to her thin size, battleship AP has the potential to go through her and out the other side before detonating, especially when perfectly broadside at close range. But at longer ranges or slight angles, a well placed battleship salvo will remove most of her health.

Vallejo's citadel is particularly vulnerable, extending above the waterline and only protected by a single 102mm main belt. Her main belt and 102mm citadel cannot be overmatched, but any cruiser can easily penetrate her citadel. Her main citadel bulkhead is only 64mm thick, so any battleship that overmatches her bow or stern is likely to deal devastating damage.

However, her deck plating offers a surprising amount of protection. At 38mm thick, it will shatter most cruiser HE and cannot be overmatched by any battleship AP.

Further aiding her survivability, Vallejo boasts an impressive concealment. Able to get as low as 9.35km with Concealment Expert and the concealment upgrade, she is one of the stealthiest cruisers at Tier IX and one of the stealthiest in her entire matchmaking range. Although most destroyers will still outspot her, very few cruisers can do the same.

Torpedoes pose a major threat to Vallejo. Although she is agile enough to angle against incoming fire, her slower rudder shift and lack of Hydroacoustic Search leave her much more vulnerable to torpedoes. And with only a 4% damage reduction — one of the worst among all Tier IX cruisers — she will feel any torpedo that makes contact.

Anti-aircraft

Like most American cruisers, Vallejo has strong AA defenses. With the same 6.9km range as Seattle, she can easily cover nearby allies, and her long range mounts deal more damage than her American counterparts as well. She also produces a lot of flak, and shares Seattle’s highest-in-tier flak damage. Vallejo's mid range defenses are even more impressive, reaching out to 4km (a half kilometer further than most cruisers) with some of the highest continuous damage of all Tier IX cruisers. Like most American cruisers, her short range defenses are rather unimpressive.

Vallejo mounts the Defensive AA Fire consumable in its own slot, which increases her continuous and flak damage. Like other American ships, she starts with an extra charge by default.

Captains that wish to increase her AA defenses even further can swap her Fast Takeoff Spotter for a Catapult Fighter. However, with her lower main battery range and already strong AA defenses, the spotter plane is substantially more useful.

Vallejo is a potent threat to any enemy aviation. Even without her Defensive AA Fire active, attacking her or nearby allies will be costly for many Tier X carriers, and potentially impossible for most Tier VIII carriers at the start of the battle.

Battle performance

Vallejo is a damage farmer, setting fires and melting anything in range with a steady stream of HE shells. Thanks to her improved ballistics and fast shell flight times, she is much more comfortable engaging targets at medium and long range than most American cruisers. As she can keep her distance better, she is also more comfortable in open water, although players need to keep her slow speed and lower survivability in mind.

However, with the exception of strong AA cover, that impressive damage farming potential comes at the expense of any team support capability. If she can’t burn down an enemy ship or shoot down enemy planes, there’s little she can do for her team. Players already familiar with Lazo will find a similar experience in Vallejo, and her faster shells will be a refreshing change for veteran captains of other American cruisers.

Optimal Configuration

Upgrades

Due to her Fast Takeoff Spotter’s short duration and fast cooldown, the coal Spotting Aircraft Modification 1 Increases the action time of the Spotting Aircraft, Rapid Takeoff Spotter, and High-Precision Spotter consumables.: +30% action time. upgrade is highly recommended to extend its action time. The coal Defensive AA Fire Modification 1 : +20% action time. / -10% cooldown time. upgrade is available in Slot 2 for commanders that wish to further increase the duration of Vallejo's Defensive AA Fire consumable.

The recommended upgrades are:

Commander Skills

A typical American light cruiser build is optimal for Vallejo, focusing on increasing the strength of her main battery potential and survivability. However, captains that wish to turn her into an even greater no-fly zone can opt for AA skills over ones that increase her main battery performance.

Unique commander William Halsey is a good fit for Vallejo, thanks to his Implacable and Untraceable talents that reduce main battery reload time after earning the Confederate achievement and ship detection after earning the Double Strike achievement, respectively. Special commander Alexander Ovechkin is also a good fit, thanks to his improved Survivability Expert skill.

Consumables

Vallejo equips the following consumables:

Note that Vallejo’s Repair Party only heals 10% of citadel damage received.

Camouflage

As a premium ship, Vallejo comes with Default permanent camouflage and a set of permanent combat bonuses.
