Independence — American Tier VI aircraft carrier.

A set of speedy light aircraft carriers, converted from several incomplete Cleveland-class cruisers, emerged as a result of the U.S. urgency to acquire new aircraft carriers swiftly amid the war. The primary advantage of Independence-class ships lay in their remarkable speed, allowing them to play an active role alongside strike aircraft carriers in all major U.S. Navy operations in the Pacific.

Tier VI American aircraft carrier Independence starts the split from traditional strike carriers into support carriers, with jet assisted take-off rockets and improved patrol fighters. Her hangar features tactical attack aircraft and bombers, alongside standard torpedo bombers. However, these planes do not get the smoke generator consumable found on Yorktown and Essex and have low damage output.

F4F Wildcat Tactical Attack Aircraft:

Independence’s tactical attack aircraft squadron consists of 5 aircraft that attack all at once, with each plane launching 4 rockets for a total of 20 rockets per drop. This squadron has a couple of advantages as a tactical squadron. First of all, every attack aircraft flight has JATO boosters, which increases their top speed when first launched from the flight deck. Secondly, plane losses do not matter with this squadron, as tactical squadrons always regenerate a full squadron. Finally, this squadron launches all of its rockets at once, limiting the time spent in anti-aircraft auras. The machine gun time is 3.5 seconds which makes them tricky to use against agile targets. These rockets have 27 mm penetration and 7% fire chance, making them a decent choice against cruisers and lightly armored battleships. This squadron carries Patrol Fighters with increased range and latch onto enemy planes faster at the cost of low spotting distance.

Douglas SBD-4 Tactical Dive Bombers:

Independence’s tactical dive bomber squadron consists of 6 aircraft that attack all at once, with each plane dropping 1 bomb for a total of 6 per drop. These bombers are best used against larger ships that are parallel to the planes as it shares the same circular bomb ellipse as Hornet’s B-25 tactical bomber squadron. While each bomb has decent penetration and firechance, the low bomb count and large drop reticle make them hard to use against small targets. As a tactical squadron, every bomber flight has JATO boosters, which increases their top speed when first launched from the flight deck. Plane losses do not matter with this squadron, as tactical squadrons regenerate a full squadron. This squadron carries the same consumables as the tactical attack aircraft, featuring enhanced Patrol Fighters.

TBF-1C Avenger Torpedo Bombers:

Independence’s torpedo bombers are a consistent form of damage against large targets. Each squad consists of 8 aircraft that attack in flights of 2, with each plane dropping a single torpedo for a total of 2 per drop. These torpedoes have low alpha strike individually and players must get multiple hits to deal significant damage. This squadron should be used together with the tactical squadrons to set damage over time effects in the form of fires and floods on enemy ships. As a Tier VI aircraft carrier, Independence does not get a Repair consumable for her torpedo bombers. Because this is a standard squadron, it is limited by the amount of planes left in reserve and its fairly long restoration time. Players must be careful to attack isolated targets and avoid anti-air blobs to preserve planes throughout the battle. Pre dropping can be beneficial when forced to attack heavier anti-air auras. This is achieved by purposefully dropping a strike or two into the water and sending them back to the carrier.

Ship:

Independence is a weakly armored aircraft carrier that travels at a fast 31.6 knots. Her deck armor is weak at 21 mm and her hull is covered in standard 16 mm plating. Her base concealment is very good at 9.9 km, which allows players to push the carrier hull into optimal positions to provide Patrol Fighters and strikes onto important targets.

As a light aircraft carrier, her anti-aircraft suit is very bad, with 3.5 km range, no flak clouds, and low DPS. Patrol fighters are necessary in order to prevent strikes from enemy carriers. She is also the only Tier VI carrier with no secondary batteries, which leaves her vulnerable against destroyers that get too close.

Pros:

  • Access to tactical squadrons with JATO boosters
  • Enhanced Patrol Fighters with faster reaction time
  • Good concealment

Cons:

  • Weak deck armor
  • Low damage output on tactical squadrons
  • Low torpedo alpha damage
  • Patrol Fighters have low spotting distance
  • Does not have secondaries
  • Bad AA range and no flak clouds

Research

Researchable upgrades for Independence:

  1. Hull: Upgrade to Hull (B) for improved survivability, maneuverability and AA. Research of this module unlocks progression to Yorktown.
  2. Tactical Rocket Aircraft: Upgrade to F4F Wildcat for improved plane HP, restoration time and an extra plane for the squadron.
  3. Torpedo Bombers: Upgrade to TBF-1C Avenger for improved plane speed, HP and restoration time, as well as two extra planes for the squadron.
  4. Tactical Dive Bombers: Upgrade to Douglas SBD-4 for improved plane HP, restoration time and an extra plane for the squadron.
