Tier IX Pan-Asian premium cruiser Tianjin shares some similar aspects to her same-tier counterpart Riga, being a well-armored ship with powerful guns. However, while Riga favors mid- to close-range engagements, Tianjin puts an emphasis on long-range combat with her main battery peculiarities and access to High-Precision SpotterExtends main battery firing range and increases accuracy. Short action time..

Hull

Sharing the same hull as Riga, Tianjin boasts some of the highest survivability among Tier IX cruisers. Her 140 mm main belt and 35 mm upper belt allow her to deflect most shells when she is properly angled. Her 40 mm deck will shatter most cruiser-HE shells. She has a standard 25 mm bow and stern, with the former additionally protected by a 40 mm icebreaker. Her HP pool of 50,500 is on the higher end of Tier IX cruisers, only beaten by large cruisers. However, she is not without weaknesses. Her citadel is large, so she can take a large amount of damage if she presents her broadside. She is also a large target and rather easy to hit. In spite of this, Tianjin can be a difficult ship to take down with her above-average armor scheme.

Tianjin pays the price for her survivability with her maneuverability. While her top speed of 33.5 knots is above average, her turning circle and rudder shift are poor, at 920 meters and 13.6 seconds respectively. Her concealment is also high, reaching only 12.1 km even when fully specced for. Careful maneuvering is required, as her large citadel means one wrong move can quickly send her back to port.

Armament

Like Riga, Tianjin’s main armament comprises nine 220 mm guns housed in three triple turrets. Her AP shells retain Riga’s signature improved pen angles and good penetration, and have slightly higher damage. Unlike Riga, Tianjin uses standard cruiser dispersion. While she has less of an edge at close- and mid-range engagements, she can excel at long-range combat. This advantage is further compounded by her high base range of 19.3 km, which can be further extended with her High-Precision SpotterExtends main battery firing range and increases accuracy. Short action time.. Her shells also have flat ballistics, making aiming relatively easy. Captains should use her AP shells as much as possible, as her HE shells have standard characteristics for their caliber. Her reload is mediocre at 15 seconds base, somewhat hampering her damage output and making HE even less appealing. It should only be used against heavily angled targets or destroyers. Tianjin’s gun handling is below average, with a slow turret traverse speed of 27.7 seconds and poor firing angles. Captains should plan which targets they wish to engage in advance.

Tianjin’s AA defenses are mediocre. She has a respectable range of 6 km, but her long-range DPS is poor. Her mid-range DPS is decent, but she lacks short-range defenses. Her flak count is also on the lower end at only 5 clouds. Captains should seek allied assistance to deal with enemy aircraft.

Tianjin carries standard Depth Charge Airstrikes for a Tier IX cruiser. She has two charges with a 7 km range and 30 second reload. Each charge has one aircraft armed with two bombs that deal up to 4,200 damage each. Captains should make active use of this armament whenever there are signs of a submarine's presence nearby, such as fuel spills and sonar pings.

Consumables

Tianjin is unique among Tier IX cruisers by carrying the Fast Damage Control TeamWhen activated, instantly repairs fires, floods, and incapacitations, and prevents more for the duration., with an increased action time (10 s) and reduced cooldown (40 s) compared to the standard Damage Control PartyWhen activated, instantly repairs fires, floods, and incapacitations, and prevents more for the duration.. Unlike other ships with the consumable, hers has unlimited charges, further enhancing her survivability.

Tianjin also stands out with her High-Precision SpotterExtends main battery firing range and increases accuracy. Short action time., similar to the one found on the tech tree Japanese battlecruisers. The consumable slightly increases both her range and accuracy, allowing her to more precisely hit targets at long range at the cost of a shorter duration than the normal Spotting AircraftWhile active, a spotter plane circles the ship enhancing main battery firing range.. It comes with five charges and a 100 s cooldown, which can be improved with Eye in the Sky to seven charges and 50 s respectively. Captains should make frequent use of this consumable given its high amount of charges, primarily against broadside targets at long range.

Tianjin comes with a standard Repair PartyWhile active, restores a percentage of the ship's health points each second., and a choice between standard variants of Hydroacoustic SearchWhile active, detects all enemy ships and torpedoes within the specified radius, without regard of obstacles such as smoke and terrain. and Defensive AA FireWhile active, the damage per second of large caliber anti-aircraft guns is increased.. The former is preferred, given her underwhelming AA.

Gameplay

Given her differences compared to Riga, Tianjin finds herself at home in long-range fights. Captains should take up good positions on the map and use her range to establish crossfires. Tianjin’s High-Precision SpotterExtends main battery firing range and increases accuracy. Short action time. allows her to effectively punish enemy mistakes with her AP shells. Her survivability and Fast Damage Control TeamWhen activated, instantly repairs fires, floods, and incapacitations, and prevents more for the duration. allow her to tank more damage compared to most cruisers. However, her poor concealment and maneuverability mean captains should always have a close eye on the battle, as Tianjin takes time to respond to new situations.

Tianjin presents a longer-ranged variant of Riga, and provides new tools to succeed in this shifted role. She has a low skill floor, but a high skill ceiling for captains of all skill levels to reach. Her consumables also open up more opportunities compared to traditional cruisers.

  • Good HP pool
  • Well-armored, with a 40 mm deck and icebreaker bow
  • AP shells have improved pen angles and high penetration

  • Unlike Riga, uses standard cruiser dispersion
  • Fast Damage Control TeamWhen activated, instantly repairs fires, floods, and incapacitations, and prevents more for the duration. has unlimited charges
  • High-Precision SpotterExtends main battery firing range and increases accuracy. Short action time. increases accuracy and range, with a short cooldown and lots of charges

  • Poor turning circle and rudder shift
  • High concealment
