Grom — European Tier VII destroyer.

Grom and Błyskawica entered service in 1937, becoming the strongest European destroyers of their time after the latest French ones. With the outbreak of World War II, the destroyers broke through the Baltic to Britain to help escort wartime supply convoys to Poland. However, the convoys were never organized due to the rapid fall of Poland, and Grom came under the command of the British Navy. Being part of it, she took part in the Norwegian campaign. On May 4, 1940, one of Grom's torpedo tubes was hit by a bomb, which caused the torpedoes to detonate. It took less than three minutes for the ship to sink.

Grom was first released for sale on DD MMM YYYY.

Tier VII Grom is a sister ship to the premium Blyskawica and shares a similar role, but changes her handling and weapons mean that the two ships feel very different.

The Ship

Befitting her role as a gunboat, Grom has a rather large health pool which enables her to engage in sustained battles. However, it should be noted that there are still several destroyers at her tier with more hit points and higher DPM so racing into a confrontation is not advised. Her base concealment of 7.2 km puts her in the middle of the pack for Tier VII destroyers, she can reduce this to 6.5 km. When she is top tier her concealment is competitive, allowing her to outspot many of the ships which could outgun her. When she is downtiered however, her concealment can often feel lacking against dedicated destroyer hunters. It should be noted that she is not alone in this situation which is common to most Tier VII destroyers.

Grom carries a standard Smoke GeneratorWhile active, generates a smoke screen that blocks line-of-sight for both enemies and teammates. which creates a series of smoke clouds which each take 85 seconds to disperse. This has three uses as standard with 160 seconds cooldown between uses. In her second consumable slot, Grom has an Engine BoostWhile active, increases a ship's speed by a fixed percentage. consumable which provides an 8% boost to her top speed for 90 seconds. This is a rather short duration compared to other ships with this consumable, although she gets four charges as standard which partially compensates for this.

Grom has a good top speed of 39 knots placing her among the top few ships at her tier, when her engine boost is activated her straight line speed rises to 42 knots.. This allows her to chase down weaker ships or potentially break contact with more powerful ones. However, she takes a rather long time to accelerate to her top speed and she responds slowly to rudder inputs. Grom can struggle to maneuver, particularly in the short range duels common to destroyer fights.

Armament

Grom has a main battery of seven 120 mm guns in four turrets, three twin mounts and a single mount. These weapons can only fire HE shells which can limit their effectiveness, particularly against cruisers. The small gun caliber means her DPM output is rather uninspiring, placing her below most other gunboat destroyers. She is an adequate fire starting ship, but the short range of her main battery limits her ability to engage larger targets without putting herself in danger. In ideal circumstances she can expect to set 5-6 fires per minute.

Grom’s torpedoes can best be described as better than nothing. She mounts two triple torpedo launchers on her centreline with rather restricted launch angles. Although they reload quickly, they have the striking power of soggy bread. They have the same damage as the weapons carried by Skone and Stord ‘43, but without the range that those ships have. They can just about be launched from stealth, but trying to position for an attack will feel like a waste of effort for the woeful results that are obtained.

Anti-Aircraft

In common with most destroyers, Grom lacks the weapons to truly defend herself against air attack. Her AA guns can reach out as far as 3.5 km, although players are advised to turn off her guns unless she is detected.

Anti-Submarine

Grom drops a pattern of ten depth charges from her stern. However, her depth charges deal just 2400 damage for a direct hit. Multiple depth charges will be needed to sink a submarine, even with direct hits. To add to this challenge, Grom does not have a Hydroacoustic Search, so tracking submarines can be difficult.

Battle Performance

Grom occupies a somewhat unusual position, she has the detection and health pool of a gunboat destroyer, but her main battery damage is throttled by the small caliber and HE only limitation of her shells. When facing larger ships, she relies on her smokescreen or island cover to safely engage, but as she lacks a Hydroacoustic Search she is at serious risk of being torpedoed in her own smoke. If players are able to take advantage of her speed and health to bully other destroyers and avoid incoming fire, Grom can be quite a thorn in the side.

Pros:

  • Decent health pool
  • Fast straight line speed
  • Torpedoes can be launched from stealth

Cons:

  • Only has HE shells
  • Middling DPM from main battery
  • Terrible torpedo armament

Research

Researchable upgrades for Grom:

  1. Hull: Upgrade to Hull (B) for improved survivability, maneuverability and AA. Research of this module unlocks progression to Split.
  2. Gun Fire Control System: Upgrade to SUO Mk 7 Mod. 2 for an extra 10% range on the main battery.
