Lambros Katsonis — European Tier IX destroyer.

In the late 1920s, there was a dispute among the leaders of the Greek Navy about whether to invest in building more conventional ships or build fewer but stronger ones. In 1929, as Turkey purchased four destroyers from Italy, the first approach prevailed, and Greece ultimately ordered four destroyers to be built with simplified technology, also in Italy. An alternative solution could be the other approach, which envisaged ordering a pair of large ships with 140 mm guns. The most suitable was one of the pre-designs of a fleet cruiser that the British Admiralty was considering at that time. Namely, the E-class cruiser armed with six 140 mm guns. Lambros Katsonis was named after the leader of the national liberation struggle of the Greek people.

Lambros Katsonis was first released for sale on 25 May 2023.

Overview

A representative of the “Gunship” destroyer line leading up to Gdansk, Tier IX European destroyer Lambros Katsonis is characterized by her powerful main battery, large hitpoint pool, high speed, and flexible consumable set. Like Split, Katsonis has access to both a smoke generator, and a fast cooldown Surveillance Radar with a short action time but short cooldown and numerous charges, but only fires High Explosive shells. She also comes equipped with two fast-loading torpedo launchers with high speed torpedoes that have decent range but deal low damage.

Survivability

Katsonis does not come with any noteworthy armor for a Tier IX destroyer, but she does have a lot of hitpoints to work with (20,300, or 23,450 with Survivability Expert). This puts her towards the higher end of Tier IX destroyers, ahead of ships such as Mogador or Udaloi and just behind Neustrashimy and Kitakaze. However, unlike most of the major gunboat destroyers at this tier, Katsonis has no specialized survivability gimmicks like improved saturation or a Repair Party. Katsonis captains will need to carefully manage their hitpoints, especially in the opening phases of a battle.

Armaments

Katsonis has a powerful armament that centers around her six 140 mm guns, a unique caliber for the tier that lends itself to excellent gunnery characteristics. With all of her guns firing, Katsonis can shoot nearly 95 HE rounds per minute, giving her the third highest HE DPM of all Tier IX destroyers behind only Kitakaze and Friesland (and their respective clones). Combined with her excellent ballistics, solid range, and good fire chance, her guns can be effective against most targets. However, this comes with the downside of having no access to AP ammunition. Despite her relatively quick 3.8 second base reload and good ballistics, Katsonis cannot get up close and ambush thinly armored targets like some of the other gunboats at this tier. She makes up for this shortcoming with the second highest fires per minute for a Tier IX destroyer of 9.5.

Katsonis will need to make good use of her relatively limited torpedo armament to deal with targets up close. With only 4 tubes per side and the typical low damage of European torpedoes, captains will need to land all 8 torpedoes to deal significant damage, although lower tier battleships and most cruisers or destroyers will be severely damaged if not outright killed.

One other thing that ought to be mentioned about Katsonis is her unusual main battery layout — her three forward guns are arranged in a “pyramid” configuration. While she can shoot all six of her main battery guns at once, it can only be done at specific angles when facing entirely forward. This exposes her broadside and can result in catastrophic damage if players aren’t careful. Katsonis captains are only advised to do this when firing from smoke or taking advantage of a distracted target.

Ergonomics

Katsonis has above average maneuverability for a Tier IX destroyer, with a somewhat large turning radius of 720 m, a high top speed of 38 knots, and a fast rudder shift of 4.6 seconds. Combined with the Engine Boost consumable, Katsonis has the ability to reposition quite well, especially when facing stealthier and similarly maneuverable destroyers. However, she has terrible concealment for a Tier IX destroyer, with only Mogador, Tashkent and Udaloi having worse concealment. However, thanks to the combination of her Smoke Generator and Surveillance Radar, she can easily counter any opponent that outspots her and deal significant damage to them while the radar is active.

Defensive Capabilities

Katsonis has somewhat decent AA DPS but zero flak bursts to dissuade carriers from striking her. With her enormous air detection range and large size, she is an easy target for carriers when she’s out of her smoke or unsupported in the open. Sticking close to allies is the best thing for her when going against enemy carriers.

Katsonis’s depth charges are decidedly mediocre for the tier. Although she can throw a total of 24 bombs into the water, the alpha damage of just 2500 is among the worst for the tier. Numerous other ships such as the Japanese, American, and British destroyers all get either more charges or bombs with much higher damage. It is a serviceable tool against enemy submarines if you manage to catch one, but it’s not a guaranteed kill weapon.

Performance

Katsonis stands out thanks to her excellent gunpower, versatile consumable set and excellent flexibility. However, she struggles against stealthier gunboats or when uptiered due to her relatively large size, poor main battery firing angles, and lack of Repair Party or improved saturation. Additionally, her torpedos are primarily a defensive weapon when absolutely necessary. Overall, she prefers to play at medium to longer ranges, supporting stealthier destroyers or farming down cruisers and battleships. Having that radar also lets her ambush destroyers and take big chunks out of their health, or finish off a low health opponent that might have otherwise gotten away.

Pros:

  • Large health pool
  • Excellent main battery performance with good ballistics and high fire chance
  • Fast torpedo reload with good rear firing angles
  • High top speed with a fast rudder shift
  • Surveillance Radar and Smoke Generator consumables in separate slots

Cons:

  • Large target
  • Limited firing angles on her forward guns
  • Slow turret traverse
  • No AP shells
  • Low torpedo damage
  • Large turning radius
  • Poor concealment

Research

Researchable upgrades for Lambros Katsonis:

  1. Hull: Upgrade to Hull (B) for improved survivability, maneuverability and AA. Research of this module unlocks progression to Gdańsk.
  2. Gun Fire Control System: Upgrade to SUO Mk 9 Mod. 2 for an extra 10% range on the main battery.
