Yueyang — Pan-Asian Tier X destroyer.

Former U.S. destroyer of the Allen M. Sumner class (USS Haynsworth, DD-700) that was transferred to the Republic of China (Taiwan) in 1970. She was developed from the very successful Fletcher class. In contrast to her predecessor, she had more powerful artillery, but ran at a lower speed.

Player Opinion

Performance

Warning: The data presented in the AA Defense sidebar section may be incorrect.
Refer to the in-game Port screens for more useful data.

Yueyang is quite similar to Tier X American destroyer Gearing both appearance and play-style. However, there are some significant differences between the two; most notably, Yueyang features deep water torpedoes, a choice between the unique Pan-Asian Smoke GeneratorWhile active, generates a smoke screen that blocks line-of-sight for both enemies and teammates. consumable or Surveillance RadarWhile active, detects all enemy ships within the specified radius, disregarding obstacles such as smoke and terrain., and a noticeably slower main battery reload.

Having similar guns like Gearing, Yueyang implies that she has has a fair main battery firepower mounted on her deck. However, her main battery reload time is 1 second slower than Gearing putting you at a major gunpower disadvantage when put up against most contemporary destroyers such as Halland or Daring. Therefore, in most cases, she cannot defend herself against other destroyers. Though you can peck away at a battleship's health from the unique Smoke GeneratorWhile active, generates a smoke screen that blocks line-of-sight for both enemies and teammates. consumable shared by all Pan-Asian destroyers in the tech tree, or dissuade enemies from drawing near with the sheer intimidation factor afforded by being constantly hit by a new salvo every four seconds, it is less efficient than playing as a pure torpedoboat. In addition, the 127mm mount on Yueyang has slightly more range than the Gearing’s, but not so much to compensate the firepower difference caused by the slower reload time.

For a destroyer, stealth is everything, and Yueyang does not disappoint in this department. She has the third lowest surface detectability among all Tier X destroyers, edging out the nearest competitors by a slight margin and beaten only by Shimakaze and Gearing with Unique Upgrades. Unfortunately, as Tier X destroyers tend to have worse detection when compared to their Tier IX counterparts, this isn't much consolation. Yueyang also has the second lowest hit pool out of her counterparts. She sits much, much lower in the water than Gearing does, making her harder to hit at range and allowing her to avoid damage her sister ship might have taken. Also, she has better handling characteristics than Gearing; especially considering that Pan-Asian destroyers do not have the option to take the Defensive AA FireWhile active, the damage per second of large caliber anti-aircraft guns is increased. consumable, pigeonholing them into using the Engine BoostWhile active, increases a ship's speed by a fixed percentage. consumable instead.

The biggest difference between Yueyang and the destroyers of other nations are her deep water torpedoes. With some differences, they are the same torpedoes found on Gearing. They have 3.0 km less range, but travel two knots faster. They both do the same amount of damage, but Yueyang's torpedoes takes longer to reload. However, deep water torpedoes are less detectable at the price of not being able to hit any other destroyers (allies and enemies alike). They are very much specialized at dealing with larger ships, and fulfill this duty admirably. Due to their low detectability, there is almost no time for enemy ships to react to or dodge the torpedoes (less than five seconds before other modifiers are accounted for).

Pros:

  • Better main battery range than American counterpart Gearing
  • Equipped with deep water torpedoes with very low detectability
  • Deep water torpedoes are fast, have good range and a high flood chance
  • Very good concealment, second best among Tier 10 destroyers after Shimakaze
  • Very low profile, making Yueyang harder to hit
  • Can equip the Surveillance RadarWhile active, detects all enemy ships within the specified radius, disregarding obstacles such as smoke and terrain. consumable

Cons:

  • Second smallest hitpoint pool of all Tier 10 destroyers
  • Worse rate of fire than Gearing despite having the same main guns
  • Poor shell velocity, very high shell arcs and poor HE fire chance
  • Deep water torpedoes cannot hit enemy destroyers
  • Very long torpedo reload time
  • Must give up the excellent Pan-Asian Smoke GeneratorWhile active, generates a smoke screen that blocks line-of-sight for both enemies and teammates. to equip Surveillance RadarWhile active, detects all enemy ships within the specified radius, disregarding obstacles such as smoke and terrain.
  • The Surveillance RadarWhile active, detects all enemy ships within the specified radius, disregarding obstacles such as smoke and terrain. is short-ranged and has a short duration

Research

As a Tier X ship, Yueyang has no additional modules to research.

Optimal Configuration

Similar to other American destroyers, Yueyang can be built to favor guns or torpedoes. However, given that her largest distinguishing feature is the deep water torpedoes, it's advisable to build towards those.

Upgrades

The recommended upgrades for Yueyang are fairly obvious choices, and largely self-explanatory:

The upgrade chosen for Upgrade Slot 3 and Upgrade Slot 6 will largely determine how Yueyang plays.

Yueyang can be built as a fully dedicated torpedo boat, in which case it is advised to equip Torpedo Tubes Modification 1 +20% traverse speed of torpedo tubes. / −40% chance of critical damage to torpedo tubes. / +5% to the speed of shipborne torpedoes. in the third slot and Torpedo Tubes Modification 2 : -15% reload time. / +50% risk of incapacitation. in the sixth slot to boost torpedo reload speed as much as possible.

Alternatively, captains who favor their main battery over their torpedoes can equip Aiming Systems Modification 1 : -7% main battery dispersion. / +20% torpedo tubes traverse speed. / +5% secondary battery firing range. / -5% secondary battery dispersion. and Main Battery Modification 3 : -12% main battery loading time. / -13% main battery traverse speed. to improve Yueyangs rate of fire (though it should be noted that it would still be inferior to Gearings).

Lastly, Improved Main Artillery (–15% main battery loading time / +20% smoke screen duration / +20% Surveillance Radar duration.) is worth considering to further improve the ship's rate of fire, as well as the duration of the Surveillance RadarWhile active, detects all enemy ships within the specified radius, disregarding obstacles such as smoke and terrain. consumable, at the expense of torpedo reload speed and concealment.

Commander Skills

As with Hsienyang and Chung Mu, Yueyang commanders should start with a base build of: Preventative Maintenance at Level 1, Last Stand at Level 2, Survivability Expert at Level 3, and Concealment Expert at Level 4. The remaining 9 available skill points can be used to tailor Yueyang to taste.

Consumables

Yueyang can equip the following consumables:

Signals

Captains who have opted for a Torpedo Build Yueyang will want to equip a Juliet Whiskey Unaone (+15% chance of causing flooding.) signal in order to maximize potential damage from torpedo hits. Throwing on a Sierra Mike (+5% to the ship's maximum speed.) is an excellent way to help make up for her slow top speed. November Foxtrot (-5% reload time on all consumables.) is recommended, if available. Main Battery Build Yueyang captains should also consider Victor Lima (+1% chance of causing a fire for bombs and shells with a caliber above 160mm / +0.5% chance of causing a fire for bombs and shells with a caliber below 160mm. / +4% chance of causing flooding.) and India X-Ray (+1% chance of causing a fire for bombs and shells with a caliber above 160mm. / +0.5% chance of causing a fire for bombs and shells with a caliber below 160mm.) signals to increase the fire chance of her main battery shells.
