Performance

Elbing is a Tier X German destroyer that tends to share more in common with cruisers than other destroyers at her tier. She continues the trend of the German destroyer split with potent AP shells and slow but hard hitting torpedoes.

Armament:

While carrying the same 150 mm main battery as her predecessor Felix Schultz, Elbing gains improved shell characteristics, good ballistics, improved dispersion, and slightly more base range at 13.3 km. The HE shells are still a weak point of the ship, with low alpha damage. It is slightly made up with a good fire chance of 12% and German quarter penetration, allowing the HE shells to penetrate 38 mm armor.

The highlight of the ship is the AP shells, which have improved penetration angles (the same as heavy cruiser Des Moines) and excellent penetration (comparable to the AP pen of Hindenburg). Alongside high alpha damage of 4100, Elbing is very effective against cruisers, specifically light cruisers with weak citadel protection. These shells can deal serious damage against larger targets as well, as long as they are showing enough broadside. Against most destroyers, she will overpen broadsides but can penetrate angled targets. Armored destroyers such as Ragnar, Delny, Khabarovsk, and Elbing herself can be penetrated by AP shells.

Alongside the main battery are the torpedoes with the same characteristics as tier X battleship Schlieffen. Elbing carries ten torpedoes spread across two quintuple launchers, with each torpedo dealing a respectable 16,533 damage. These torpedoes reload quickly with a 90 second base reload time but this comes at the cost of a very slow base speed of 50 knots. This is offset by the low reaction time of 8.9 seconds allowing Elbing to launch torpedoes as a way to zone enemy ships and capture zones.

Hull:

As a destroyer leader, Elbing possesses a hull on par of a light cruiser rather than a destroyer. This translates to her maneuverability characteristics as she is not very fast at 36.2 knots and has a big turning radius of 890 meters. In practice this means players must be wary of torpedoes when sitting in smokes due to her large size and lack of Hydroacoustic Search.

The upsides come from having a massive base hp pool of 30,900, and up to 34,400 with the Survivability Expert commander skill. Alongside the minimum concealment of 6.5km, Elbing is a hard destroyer to get rid of for the enemy team. The hp pool allows her to trade against enemy destroyers and win gunfights.

Another unique feature is the armor, with 25mm side plating and deck armor. This means most destroyers will shatter HE shells and allow Elbing to bounce AP shells that do not overmatch 25 mm. This can also be a weakness against destroyer AP shells if players give too much broadside. While destroyers cannot be citadelled, full penetrations are possible and will deal massive damage.

Consumables:

Much like the previous German destroyers in this tech tree line, Elbing comes with Smoke Generator, Engine Boost, and Defensive AA Fire consumables.

She comes with 3 charges of Smoke Generator consumable, which have a short 20 second action time and 97 second dispersion time. The cooldown is lengthy at 160 seconds and thus these smokes should be used only when necessary to break detection or when setting up to farm targets for extended periods of time.

The Automated Gun and Fuel Systems unique upgrade increases the speed boost bonus by 12%, giving Elbing a fast top speed of 43.4 knots.

The Engine Boost consumable is also present, with 8% speed boost for 120 seconds. This increases Elbing’s top speed to 39.1 knots, allowing her to comfortably rotate and reposition her hull quickly.

Finally, the Defensive AA Fire consumable increases AA dps by 50% and flak damage by 300%. As with all destroyers, Elbing should have her AA turned off unless she is being hovered by planes or for supporting her allies that are being struck by aircraft.

Anti-Aircraft:

Due to having light cruiser guns, Elbing gets 6.9 km AA range but is quite lackluster damage wise. She only produces 2 flak and has horrible long range and medium range AA DPS. The Defensive AA Fire consumable slightly increases her DPS but it is still not good and should not be relied on to deal with aircraft at tier X. As with most destroyers, it is important to not stray too far away from one's team and retreat back into Allied Anti-Air aura when focused by a carrier.

Battle Performance:

As stated before, Elbing should be viewed more as a cruiser rather than a destroyer, and thus should not be played as a traditional destroyer. Her playstyle is very similar to that of a smoke farming gun boat destroyer, utilizing smoke screens to remain hidden while opening up angles to farm cruisers and battleships. Due to her amazing AP shells and pinpoint dispersion, it is best to find broadside targets by positioning on flanks and creating crossfires with allied ships. By creating multiple angles, enemy cruisers, especially super light cruisers, must be wary of being citadeled and even outright deleted. Her HE shells are still useful for lighting fires and penetrating heavily angled targets. When not farming targets, the slow but long range torpedoes should be utilized to zone ships.

Due to her fairly low detection for a gunboat of this size and massive hp pool, Elbing can bully other gunboats by taking advantageous trades with her AP shells. However, torpedo destroyers who keep their distance can be difficult to deal with. Without any utility of her own, Elbing relies on allied Hydroacoustic Search and Surveillance Radar when playing for key areas.

The addition of the unique upgrade, Automated Gun and Fuel Systems, allows Elbing to be played in open water, utilizing the increased speed from her Engine Boost to dodge incoming fire at range. This further pushes her into the farming destroyer role and players can opt for greedier builds that push her damage output but decrease game impact.

Overall, Elbing is a unique gunboat/cruiser hybrid that relies on AP shells to do damage and impacts the outcomes of matches through dealing more damage than the enemies destroyers.

Pros:

  • High HP pool
  • 25 mm armor plating
  • High AP penetration with improved ricochet angles
  • High AP alpha damage
  • Improved Dispersion
  • High fire chance
  • Improved HE penetration
  • Long range torpedoes with low reaction time
  • Decent Concealment
  • Access to Engine Boost
  • Access to Defensive AA Fire

Cons:

  • Large Target
  • Poor HE alpha damage
  • Long reload time for a destroyer
  • Big turning radius and slow rudder shift
  • Very slow torpedoes
  • Poor AA DPS
  • Lacks utility consumables

Research

As a Tier X ship, Elbing has no upgrades to research.

Optimal Configuration

Upgrades

Recommended upgrades for Elbing:

Commander Skills

While the range of Elbing's torpedoes is long enough that they can be considered an offensive weapon, they are not the ship's primary strength. Skill points are better invested elsewhere.

Slot 2 should be Engine Boost Modification 1 if the player can afford to spend the coal, especially so if using the Automated Gun and Fuel Systems. While it is an investment of research bureau points, it is pretty much a straight upgrade to Elbing’s performance and should be bought if captains want to get the most out of Elbing.

Commander Skills

Gunther Lutjens is recommended for players who like playing Elbing due to the useful and easily achievable talents that he provides.

The Resilient talent provides healing after spotting 3 enemy ships, which is easily done with a destroyer and is useful for a ship with no Repair Party.

The Main Battery Loader talent provides a 7.5% decrease in reload time once per battle after 140 main battery hits. This provides more offensive capability in battle and is relatively easy to achieve.

An all rounder build for Elbing takes advantage of her firepower and hull and increases effectiveness for random battles. The first ten points are mandatory for pretty much every destroyer: Preventative Maintenance: increase survivability of modules, Last Stand: ensure the hull can still move with a damaged engine, Survivability Expert: more health allows for more risks and surviving engagements, Concealment Expert: easier time sneaking up on enemies and disengaging from fights

Next skills improve range and firepower: Adrenaline Rush: more damage output when damaged

Main Battery and AA Expert: more range

Extra Heavy Ammunition: Increases AP damage

Gun Feeder: easily swap between AP and HE shells

Grease the Gears: easily putting guns on target faster

Another build focuses more on damage output and leans heavily into the unique upgrade for a more open water DPM playstyle. The first 3 points are self explanatory Preventative Maintenance, Last Stand

The next skills lean heavily into damage output Adrenaline Rush: more damage output when damaged

Fearless Brawler: Faster reloads while spotted increases damage output

Main Battery and AA Expert: more range

Main Battery and AA Specialist: more damage output

Extra Heavy Ammunition: Increases AP damage

Gun Feeder: easily swap between AP and HE shells

Grease the Gears: easily putting guns on target faster

This build notably does not use concealment expert or survivability expert as it is expected to be spotted often and dodge easily with the usage of unique upgrade. This isn’t recommended for the average/inexperienced player as builds that don't use maximum concealment are generally harder to play and harder to win games with.
