Maine — American Tier ★ battleship.

In this hypothetical development of the Montana-class battleships, the number of 406 mm guns could be increased to sixteen by replacing the three-gun turrets with four-gun ones. While four-gun turrets were initially proposed for battleships of the North Carolina class, they were, however, equipped with 356 mm guns. If the goal were to enhance the firepower of the Montana-class battleships without utilizing a larger caliber, opting for four-gun turrets would be the most logical choice.

Summary

Proudly resting at the top of one of the oldest lines in the game, Maine takes the top spot from Montana in representing the US fast battleship line. She embodies all the features of the line, excelling in survivability, equipped with a hefty artillery, and protected by a solid armor scheme. Maine is a ship that can do it all.

Armor

Like most Tier X and XI battleships, Maine is mainly protected by 32 mm armor. The bow, stern, and torpedo protection are all 32 mm thick, with a 38 mm upper belt between the 1st and 4th turret. Like most US Battleships, the superstructure is entirely armored by 19 mm, with the exception of conning towers which are 406 mm and 254 mm respectively. Unlike Montana, Maine lacks a heavily armored casemate or an underwater citadel, which leads to weak side protection against large caliber fire. However, she does feature spaced armor with the torpedo belt, which provides protection against small and medium caliber fire.

Armament

The main distinction between Montana and Maine is an additional 4 guns in Maine’s armament. She carries sixteen 406 mm guns housed in 4 turrets, tied for the highest number of guns on a battleship in the game. Her AP shells deal up to 13,500 damage each; paired with the high number of shells, Maine has the ability to remove large amounts of HP from the game. On the surface the guns do not sound very accurate, with a max dispersion of 302 m and a sigma of 1.7, but the amount of shells make up for the low sigma and her accuracy feels similar to Montana’s. Maine’s dispersion can be further improved with Artillery Plotting Room Modification 2 : -11% main battery dispersion., which decreases her dispersion by 11%. The main downside to Maine’s main battery is her 406 mm guns, which lack the ability to overmatch the 30 mm plating found on many heavy cruisers. To make up for the lack of overmatch, Maine’s HE is also fairly decent, dealing a maximum of 5700 damage with a respectable 38% fire chance.

Anti-Aircraft

One of Maine’s strengths is her impressive anti-aircraft capabilities. Her AA has a maximum range of 6 km, with the long range guns dealing 382 damage per second. The medium range battery opens up at 4 km and deals 333 damage per second, slightly less than her long range guns. The short range AA begins firing at 2 km, dealing a stronger 431 damage per second. However, due to the short range, its effectiveness against attacking aircraft is debatable . To aid in her medium and long range AA firepower, Maine boasts an impressive 13 flak explosions, which will deal 1820 damage if an explosion hits an enemy aircraft. Paired with her Combat Instructions which boosts her continuous AA damage by 25%, Maine has impressive anti-aircraft capabilities that enemy carriers will feel the effects of should they choose to repeatedly attack.

Battle Performance

Embodying the same concepts as Montana, Maine performs well in most playstyles. Being a jack of all trades battleship, she doesn’t necessarily stick out in any specific area. Her 14.3 km concealment is average at best, meaning Maine can’t sneak up on anything. Her speed and maneuverability also aren't the best, maxing out at 30.4 knots with a 20.1 second rudder shift and 1070 m turning circle, right in the middle of the pack against other super battleships. Maine is best played as a supporting battleship, exploiting broadsides of ships angling to allied players. She should initially be played at mid range, with the ability to be the driving force behind a push, utilizing her Combat Instructions to mitigate fire damage caused by focus fire. Alternatively, Maine’s 115,100 HP can be used to soak up damage while covering a retreat, once again using a balance of Damage Control PartyWhen activated, instantly repairs fires, floods, and incapacitations, and prevents more for the duration. and Combat Instructions to manage fire and flood damage. Maine can position herself on a flank to force enemies into crossfires, or opt to set up closer to the middle of the map to provide support towards either side as needed. Without the ability to overmatch most heavily armored targets, Maine should utilize HE when targets are angled towards her, and equipping Gun Feeder is essential for quickly changing shell types to stay effective in engagements.

Combat Capability - Immediate Threat Elimination

Maine is equipped with the Immediate Threat Elimination combat instruction, which increases the damage of her AA and reduces the damage she takes from fire and flooding. It can be activated after repeatedly hitting enemy ships with main battery shells.

Requirements:

Can only be used after hitting enemy ships with main battery shells.
Progress per main battery shell hit: 6%

Effects:

  • Continuous AA damage: +25%
  • Fire damage: -65%
  • Flooding damage: -65%
  • Action time: 45 seconds

Pros:

  • Strong main battery with 16 406 mm guns
  • Combination of Damage Control, Heal, and Combat Instructions make Maine extremely durable
  • Strong AA defense
  • Additional accuracy due to the ability to mount Artillery Plotting Room Modification 2 : -11% main battery dispersion.
  • Heaviest broadside salvo at the tier

Cons:

  • Armor feels weak compared to Montana
  • Lack of 32 mm overmatch
  • Large superstructure
