Patrie — French Tier ★ battleship.

If development had continued on battleships with 431 mm main battery guns, the next logical step would have been to increase the number of guns. Achieving that would require an additional main battery turret, even taking into account a reduction in AA and auxiliary artillery. In that case, the battleship's artillery would have been twelve 431 mm guns in three quadruple-gun turrets.

Patrie was added to the French tech tree on 5 October 2022.

French super-battleship Patrie is the pinnacle of the French battleship tech tree. She’s armed with twelve 431 mm guns in quadruple turrets, but she doesn’t have a Combat Instruction like other superships. Her consumable choice is the same as other high tier French battleships, although her Speed Boost consumable is similar to Bourgogne’s.

Armor:

Like all other Tier VIII+ French battleships, Patrie is entirely covered with 32 mm armor. Her citadel is at the waterline, with 80 mm deck plating and 45-55 mm side plating, and protected behind a massive 420 mm turtleback with an additional 90 mm plating on the slopes. Her turtleback is thick enough to prevent citadel damage at long range, but at close range battleships can still punch through that armor and reach her citadel. Her 32 mm plating covering the entire ship means that most enemy cruisers can easily farm her with HE. Also, battleships that overmatch 32 mm plating are a significant threat, as she can't angle against their AP.

Armament:

Patrie’s main battery consists of twelve 431 mm guns in three quadruple turrets, two fore and one aft. They are the same guns found on République, but they reload slower at 30 seconds rather than 24. She compensates this extra reload time with a larger number of rifles. Her 1.8 sigma is rather low, leading to more shells landing further away from where she aims. Her AP shells can overmatch 30 mm of armor, and each one of them can deal up to 14,500 damage. This poses a massive threat to most of the cruisers in her matchmaking window. Her sheer broadside weight makes her a threat to other targets as well, given the amount of shells that can hit and her high salvo damage. Her secondary battery consists of nine 152 mm dual-purpose guns in three triple turrets, one fore and two aft, and sixteen 100 mm dual-purpose guns in eight twin mounts. They have a decent range, 8.3 km stock, and can reach out to 12.5 km when fully upgraded. However, investing captain skills into secondaries isn't recommended. Due to the lack of penetration on her 100 mm guns, she needs the Inertia Fuse for HE Shells skill for them to penetrate superstructures and destroyer hulls, which cuts her secondary and main battery fire chance in half.

AA Armament:

Patrie’s AA defenses are decent overall. Unlike other super battleships, her AA is divided into two auras, long range and medium range, lacking the short range damage aura. Her continuous AA damage is overall similar to other super battleships, slightly less than Hannover but better than Satsuma, but the combination of high flak count and damage is what puts her AA effectiveness at the front of the pack, with 1680 damage per single explosion on twelve puffs. Her huge AA battery can be a good deterrent against most enemy carriers that want to strike the ship. However, super carrier tactical squadrons are too fast to be consistently damaged by her AAA, unless the player makes mistakes like flying through her AA without striking her.. The lack of a short range aura doesn’t really impact her defenses, since the DPS is high enough for both long and medium range.

Consumables:

Patrie is equipped with a standard battleship Damage Control Party, with 15 s action time and 80 s cooldown. Her Repair Party is the standard battleship version of the consumable, healing 0.5% of her total HP each second, with a 28 s duration and 80 s reload. As her last consumable, Patrie comes with an Engine Boost consumable, which increases her maximum speed by 15% like Bourgogne rather than République's 8%, with a 120 second action time and cooldown. This higher maximum speed buff comes at the cost of 60 seconds of action time, since République speed boost lasts for 180 s with the same reload time.

Survivability:

Patrie has 108,900 hitpoints. She’s spotted from 14 km by sea and 12.3 km by air, which is average for super battleships. The combination of her concealment, her size and her weak external armor make her a vulnerable target against both carriers and surface ships. She can’t sustain prolonged fights against ships that can consistently do high amounts of damage to her, like Hannover and Satsuma, or against large numbers of enemy ships that can focus fire her and kill her quickly. Like other battleships, her fires burn for 60 s and floods last for 40 s. To mitigate the damage taken by fires and floods, it’s essential to take all the signals and upgrades to reduce their duration, in addition to the Fire Prevention and Basics of Survivability captain skills. Her torpedo belt can reduce incoming torpedo damage by 29%, so it’s not a bad idea to increase that value with the Vigilance captain skill, bringing that value up to 36%.

Maneuverability:

Patrie is the fastest super battleship, with a max speed of 37.5 knots with the Sierra Mike flag and speed boost consumable. If the player decides to take the Brisk captain skill, her maximum speed increases to 41.2 knots. This high maximum speed allows her to relocate quickly between different parts of the map, making her versatile in a competitive environment like Ranked and Clan Battles. However, her agility is awful because she has a 1090 m turning radius, one of the largest among battleships, and 19.6 s rudder shift time.

Battle Performance:

Like other high tier French battleships, Patrie is best suited for medium to long range combat. Players must be aware of her strengths and weaknesses and act accordingly as the game evolves, leading the charge if the flank is empty or waving the white flag if there are six enemy ships pushing. She has poor concealment and poor handling, so the captain has to avoid committing too much to a flank, because it can be hard to disengage without island cover, or an allied smoke screen. However, if the captain stays out of trouble or can manage HP correctly, she can move quickly around the map, creating crossfires and flanking enemy ships. Patrie’s guns are overall good, but her poor dispersion Both Patrie’s HE and AP shells are good, so selecting the right shell is important to perform well on this ship. HE should be used to burn down angled targets and AP to blast cruisers or battleships giving broadside. Her secondary battery is situational, needing IFHE to work if the captain wants to go for the full secondary build, but it’s not recommended. She lacks a Combat Instruction, so she doesn’t have any special gimmick to spice up her gameplay, but it also doesn’t compromise her playability. All in all, Patrie can be enjoyable to play and a reliable choice for captains that like battleships with more dynamic gameplay.

Pros:

  • Excellent main battery range of 26.63 km.
  • 30mm overmatch thanks to her 431 mm guns.
  • Large number of main battery guns.
  • Great secondary battery range that can reach 12.5 km with a full secondary build
  • Decent AA armament.
  • Fastest super battleship.
  • Has access to the Engine Boost consumable.

Cons:

  • Relatively weak armor, susceptible to HE penetrations and very large-caliber AP.
  • Mediocre dispersion with 1.8 sigma may lead to inconsistent performances by the main battery.
  • Most of her secondary turrets are 100 mm, with poor penetration.
  • Poor rudder shift and high turning radius.
  • Enormous target with poor concealment.
