Picardie — French special premium Tier VIII battleship.

In 1912, France initiated the construction of larger docks at shipyards in Toulon and Brittany. By that time, the major naval powers were laying down ships significantly more advanced than their predecessors in terms of main caliber. France was also contemplating a shift toward a caliber of 370–380 mm; however, naval guns of this caliber were not yet accessible in France. As a solution, engineers opted to increase the number of smaller-caliber guns, with the final design featuring as many as 16 guns placed in four turrets.

Picardie was first released for sale on 22 November 2023.

Tier VIII premium French battleship Picardie follows a similar concept to her lower tier cousin Lyon. She focuses on shell volume, firing as many shells as possible with a high amount of fast-firing guns combined with her Main Battery Reload BoosterWhen used, main battery reload time is significantly reduced..

Hull

As with Lyon, Picardie’s armor is poor overall. She is covered in 32 mm plating, allowing virtually any HE shell to deal damage. Her main belt is only 240 mm thick, which most battleship AP shells can easily penetrate. Her 180 mm upper belt covers a large portion of her side, and can even be damaged by some cruiser AP at range. In addition, her HP pool is among the smallest of Tier VIII battleships, sitting at 53,400. Finally, her torpedo protection is abysmal at only 17%, making them a significant threat in combination with her already low HP. Her one redeeming factor to her armor scheme is that her citadel sits underwater, making it difficult to hit. Regardless, captains should not be looking to actively tank damage in Picardie.

Picardie’s maneuverability is a mixed bag. On the one hand, her small hull gives her an equally small turning circle of just 700 meters. Combined with her decent rudder shift of 14.1 s, she can dodge long range shots and torpedoes spotted from a distance. On the other hand, her slow speed of 27 knots means that she will struggle if captains are not careful in their positioning. Thankfully, her concealment is superb, reaching 11.3 km when fully specced for it. This gives her the upper hand in dictating engagements, provided enemy ships are at a distance.

Armament

Picardie carries the highest number of main battery guns of any Tier VIII battleship, an astounding 16 guns mounted in four turrets. Her guns are similar to those found on Toulon, but have lower damage and fire chance. Due to their smaller caliber, HE shells should be the primary ammunition of choice, as her AP shells have low penetration. When using HE, most of her damage will come from penetrations, due to her bad fire chance of only 17%. When using her AP shells, captains should aim for the upper belts of enemy battleships, as they will have an easier time penetrating those sections of armor. This is easier said than done, as Picardie’s guns have terrible accuracy, with a low sigma of 1.5 and poor dispersion. Thankfully, her guns have an improved reload of 27 s, allowing her to constantly fire at enemy ships. This partially compensates for her bad accuracy and low shell damage. Picardie’s gun handling is acceptable, with decent firing angles and turret traverse, as well as her middle two turrets being able to traverse 360 degrees. Her guns boast a high firing range of 22.7 km, but due to their low accuracy, captains should try to engage enemy ships at medium range.

Picardie’s secondary armament consists of 12 secondary guns each side, evenly split between quadruple and double mounts. While their DPM is on the higher side and they have improved range, their lack of improved accuracy means captains should avoid speccing into them.

Picardie’s AA is weak. While her long-range AA mounts have an above-average range of 6 km, their DPS is underwhelming. Her mid- and short-range mounts also share similarly low DPS values. Due to this, any defense against enemy aircraft should be sought through allied AA.

Picardie carries standard Depth Charge Airstrikes for a Tier VIII battleship. She has two charges with a 10 km range and 30 second reload. Each charge has one aircraft armed with two bombs that deal up to 4,200 damage each. Captains should make active use of this armament whenever there are signs of a submarine's presence nearby, such as fuel spills and sonar pings.

Consumables

Picardie carries a standard Damage Control PartyWhen activated, instantly repairs fires, floods, and incapacitations, and prevents more for the duration. and Repair PartyWhile active, restores a percentage of the ship's health points each second. for a battleship, but she stands out with her Main Battery Reload BoosterWhen used, main battery reload time is significantly reduced.. It reduces her reload time by 50%, allowing her to fire two salvoes through its duration. Captains should make frequent use of the consumable. In particular, it should be used when an enemy ship presents its broadside to quickly fire AP salvoes. It can also be used after an enemy ship extinguishes one or multiple fires, to potentially light subsequent ones.

Gameplay

Picardie captains should primarily focus on mid-range engagements. With her great concealment, she can take up advantageous positions in the early game and lay down fire on enemy ships. Should enemy ships present their broadside or put out a fire, her Main Battery Reload BoosterWhen used, main battery reload time is significantly reduced. will be useful for firing multiple salvoes in quick succession. Captains should be wary in their positioning, as her slow speed and poor survivability mean she won't survive under heavy fire.

Picardie doesn’t bring much in terms of game impact. While she boasts a large number of main guns, their downsides keep her potential in check. Due to her poor shell damage and accuracy, her damage output will generally be low in practice. Captains will likely find these aspects frustrating, and struggle to perform as well as many other Tier VIII battleships can.

Pros:

  • Sixteen main battery guns with good reload
  • Long main battery firing range
  • Middle two turrets can traverse 360 degrees
  • Small turning circle
  • Great concealment
  • Access to Main Battery Reload BoosterWhen used, main battery reload time is significantly reduced.

Cons:

  • Small HP pool
  • Weak armor, extensively covered in 32 mm
  • Poor torpedo protection
  • Small caliber guns with poor shell damage
  • Low AP penetration
  • Terrible HE shell fire chance for her gun caliber
  • Main battery guns have poor accuracy
  • Poor AA defenses
  • Slow speed
